The most beautiful songs

What songs do you consider to be among the most beautiful? Here's a quick list of my own off the top of my head:

  • Ebony Queen/Pam's Pad by Lenny Breau
  • Norwegian Wood, Tomorrow Never Knows by the Beatles
  • You Know, You Know by Mahavishnu Orchestra
  • Shevil by the Melvins
  • She Hangs Brightly, & All Your Sisters by Mazzy Star
  • Thru the Eyes of Ruby by Smashing Pumpkins
  • Romeo & Juliet by Tchaikovsky
  • Inca Roads by Frank Zappa (minus the parts with vocals at beginning & end), particularly the version on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 2

Looking forward to going through all the songs in this thread! Beautiful is so subjective: Pretty (happy)? Moving(sometimes painful)?

David Ruffin, formerly of Temptations, Walk Away From Love. It was an R&B #1. Not sure why this one popped into mind. Painful, beautiful voice. Try to not be moved.

Sailing: Rod Stewart
Killing of Georgie: Rod Stewart

So many more....

I was hoping this thread would catch on - getting married in August :D

The youtube links don't load at work so seeing this at home surprised me how much is already in here! I'm really looking forward to checking them all out.

For all you instrumental lovers DO NOT miss the Lenny Breau song I mentioned - looks like you can Invalid Link Removed and you can buy it for $0.15 (or the whole album for $1.35 ).

Thanks all keep the lists coming! :hyper:

"Beautiful" to me means a functioning balance between chords, lyrics and the intervals of the melody. These factors can be enhanced by skilful interpretation and judicious arranging. Here are some examples:

Ebb Tide
- a classic, passionate love ballad that's been done by many great vocalists. It has a wave-like build to a crest, then settles back.

Deep Purple - the king among 'reverie' songs. Rivaled only by Stardust - one of Hoagy Carmichael's finest.

Crazy - by Willie Nelson, done to death, but still a perfectly poised torch song that will always endure.

Somewhere - especially as sung by Tom Waits' wino persona.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow - possibly the most inspirational song in the book. Eva Cassidy made it her theme.
