"Pegleg" album - Ron Carter.
Seems like there was a time back in the 1970's when a lot of bass players forgot how to play in tune. Ron (one of my all time favorite players) had his moments. I've heard Carter's intonation problems blamed on the transition from gut to steel strings. I prefer to blame everthing about the 70's, including the decline of the U.S. automobile industry, on disco.
The most out-of-tune bass recording I've ever heard was a Muddy Waters live recording. Louis Meyers played electric bass on it. He consistently plays about a half-step flat. I had to give the CD away. Louis Meyers was normally a guitarist. His brother, Dave Meyers, was a fine bass player.
