The Muckelroy Bass Club Part 1 (It's high time!)

Checking in with my just completed custom build by Brady.
It's an older Renegade model. I saw the body on his website and saw the original client backed out of the deal several years ago. I inquired if it was still available and after some hunting around his new shop, he found it!

Specs from Brady:

*6 string Renegade Custom Fretless
*33" scale
*set neck construction
*3 piece neck (maple with wenge center)
*ebony fingerboard
*subtle lines (mahogany)
*blue Luminlay side dots
*small front face dots in between G & C.
*Sapele body
*Bocote top
* matching Bocote caps on neck
*Delano SBC dual coils.
*Muck Pre
*16.5mm spacing at the saddles.
Strung with D'Addario XL chrome flat wound strings per my request.

Pics are attached below.

She's a beauty and plays like a dream.
I also have a ProPlayer 5 Fretted bass in his cue. He just received a big shipment of tuners so those of us who have been waiting for our build completions should see them on the way to us soon.

Brady is a consummate Luthier and a great guy to work with. He makes every effort to honor his clients requests but also provides input about options that he feels would be better choices for his clients playing style and sonic preferences... lessons learned from many many basses built by him over the past decade+.

I listened to and agreed to his many suggestions and the result is the perfect bass for my playing style with amazing aesthetics as well.
He is very approachable and makes every effort to respond to emails promptly.
I strongly recommend reaching out to Brady if you are considering a bass build.

Really like the subtle detail of the wood grain in the marker lines. That's a beautiful Muck! Congrats!

Good catch! You have a sharp eye! ;)
I didn't see the grain in the pics Brady sent me during the build so I was pleasantly surprised to see them during the unveiling.
I used a Canon 80D DSLR camera for the attached pics. A smartphone may not have captured the grain markings as clearly as a higher-end camera.

Calling all Muck players out there...

I'm looking for a 5-string Muckelroy bass with 16.5mm spacing. I recently bought a used 33" 5-string Muck fretless with 16.5mm spacing from Brady (consignment), and absolutely love it! Brady told me he hasn't made very many 5 strings with the 16.5mm spacing, but I figured I'd ask around.

Do you have anything that fits the bill?
Do you know someone who does?

I'll make a great offer if anyone has one out in the wild.

TIA,

Bryan

A 16.5mm spaced 5-string Muck is a rarity but it's my preferred spacing as well.
In fact, I have a ProPlayer 5 in his cue right now with that spacing.
And the Fretless 6 Renegade I posted recently is also 16.5mm.

I have tried wider string spacing on other basses but 16.5 is my sweet spot.
I'm guessing it's from playing Warwicks for many years before deciding on a custom build by Brady.

Good luck with your search Bryan.

In my continuing search for the elusive Muck 5 (fretted) with 16.5mm (or less) spacing, I had an idea...

Buy a used Muck I like (body woods, pickups, etc.) with a bolt-on neck... then have Brady replace the bridge and build and attach a new 33", 16.5mm compatible, slimmed down neck. It appears to be do-able, but Brady's hesitancy is with the neck looking like an "after-thought" since it wouldn't fit nicely into the neck pocket on the body.

Any thoughts on this idea? Have you ever done anything similar, and did you regret it? Right now, my thought is to just keep saving up my $ until I can do a full build.

Go with a full build. Although I have no doubt Brady could execute the modification as well as anyone on the planet, I think that Brady thinks of basses as a whole, conceived unit - and equally significantly how that unit will relate to the player. If you're going to invest in a(nother?) Muckelroy, you might as well get the complete experience, which is a based on a design conceived from the ground up to do what it does.

Do a full build. As far as I know, Brady only requires a deposit to start. It's a percentage of the total build cost.

You'll be getting exactly what you want while helping the man keep his business alive.

Win/win.

IIRC, he requires 40% to start the build, 60% upon completion, which usually takes about 6 months, depending on material availability. Well worth the wait for such a fine instrument, IMHO.
