Thanks again for this tip.. for some reason I had ignored the contour buttons at first, but I tried 'em last night and found a great tone with my P5.
Contour 2, bass and treble at noon, lo mids and hi mids both at around 1:30 or 2 o'clock, a touch of Spectracomp, and Tubetone at 6. It punched through the mix nicely while keeping the bottom end.

I played my last gig in Salt Lake before I move this past weekend, and I have to say that I was very impressed by my tone. All of my tweaking at home really paid off at the gig on Saturday, the tone coming out of the BG500 was incredible! I would go as far to say that it was one of the best tones of my whole bass-playing life!

(It helped that I was playing in a 3-piece band with a very good drummer too.)

Okay so about 2 months ago, the tuner button falls off of the unit. The combo is still serviceable and sounds great! This thing has tone and power for days! It's pretty much all that I play out of anymore! Best investment that I have made amp wise thus far!

Well, even though they are now discontinued, we recently published our Link Removed in Bass Gear Magazine issue #8. FWIW, they did not tell us it was discontinued until we sent the final review to them for a look over.

It's still a great amp, regardless (even if it is a little heavy). I recently got the BG250 head from them for review, and I did play the BG250-115 combo at Summer NAMM, so they still have plenty of good stuff for us. :cool:

Long time lurker. I've had one of these for a month now at our church. Wow, what an amp. I can't imagine ever needing anything louder as I'm never going to play in a metal or hardcore band or a large venue. This amp is plenty loud for a 500 seat venue with a full band with drums.

What I love most is the clean yet aggressive tone I can get from the tube emulator and the spectra-comp. All of the overdrive/dist/tube pedals I've tried are just too obvious. I want a dirty yet understated sound. With TC's tube tone at 1-2 o'clock it's just the right amount of edginess for me and the spectra comp gives me just the right amount of sustain at 11 o'clock.

If you like to travel simple (unfortunately at 70lbs light isn't the right word) than this is the amp for you. I'll take the weight trade off since I don't need any pedals to get the sound I want.

This amp should come with a folding dolly but it's $25 at Home Depot.

My only con is I wish it had a cover. Any ideas?

I don’t think these pulled out, but that’s probably a good idea. I had an old GK410 that had those, and I’d sometimes pull the rear two out so it would tilt back a bit.

In any case, I’m not the best person to ask what’s best, ‘cause I’ll often do whatever’s cheaper/faster, haha.

Bumping an old thread to see if anyone is still using one of these as their gigging amp.

I ordered a used one of these yesterday, and am curious if these have held up after a few years of use. I've read through the whole thread and have read mostly positive comments except for the buttons falling off, the wieght, and no external speaker jack, but the last post was 4 years ago. Thanks!

I still have mine, and it’s still my go-to (and only) amp. The original buttons are still going strong. I don’t gig much at all these days, maybe 3 or 4 a year since I have no band, so it hangs out in my basement a lot. They’re occasional pick-up gigs. This amp still delivers.

I’ve changed basses back to a Stingray as well, and I also get a lot of my tone from pedals, so I’m setting the amp quite a bit different than I used to (described in this thread earlier). It’s mostly flat with a big bass bump. Very little tubetone and the Spectracomp essentially off. It also doubles as an amp for an electronic drum kit and does a very fine job of it.

My only complaints are the weight, lack of speaker extension (although I’ve never once been hurting for more volume), and I think it partly cost me a gig once. The band I was auditioning for looked at it and said “That’s your gigging amp?” All snarky-like. They were actually a really good band, but oh well.
