The new Yamaha BB425

So reading this thread (and seeing all of the reviews of the high dollar model) I decided to take the plunge and order the lower line BB424x (w/pickguard and control plate, in TSB) a couple of weeks ago. So......I got the BB424 (no pickguard)...bummer! Called them up for and exchange.....guess what happens again...yep, they did the same thing!! So twice I did not get the X version (not that the non pickguard 424 is bad, I just liked the look of the X version) Just got a call from a wharehouse mngr from MF saying that there is no X version and if I did another exchange I would get the same thing......wait what! I checked both the Yamaha site and other online sites (and theirs with the $100 off) and clearly there is an X model? So......if anyone is ordering an X version from MF....heads up, you might get the 424 (and or 425) which does not have the pickguard/control plate. However if you do get and X model please post, not sure if they were just giving me the runaround????
just a rant I guess.......

I went through the same thing with MF. I ordered a TBS 424X or so I thought and got a 424. I was told it must be a mistake and ordered again only to receive another 424. They both went back at their cost. The 424 does have string through in case anyone is wondering. I told them they should really remove the photo or atleast put the right photo on the site. It looks like it has been removed. Also the bridge on these 424's is just a standard generic type, nothing special. The pics in an earlier post must be from a 1024 or 2024. If it's the 5 string version you're after, well there's no telling what you'll get...Long story even longer, I should have a BB1024x at my door later today, we shall see. (not from MF)

I had the same experience as others (ordered a BB424X but received a BB424). As I mentioned earlier, I also ordered a BB714BS. Unfortunately, I won't be keeping either one.

BB714BS
The bad new first...
  • There was a pretty serious buzzing through the amp even with all volumes turned down (maybe a faulty ground wire or insufficient shielding)
  • The body was highly microphonic. Even a light tap on the body resulted in an audible hoomph sound (a lot like a power tube that's about to die)
I REALLY liked the sonic palette available from a neck humbucker and a P in the sweet spot. The range of tones between those two is outstanding. Ultimately, this bass had too many issues for a brand new instrument to consider keeping it.

BB424
Played nicely and sounded pretty damn good all around. The P pickup yielded a solid, deep, growly tone. As bridge position J pickups go (not a sound I usually enjoy)... it sounded more full and balanced than what you typically get from that style of pickup in that body position. Combined, the two gave a decent approximation of a traditional Jazz Bass sound. Unfortunately, the instrument had a bad dead spot at the E string fifth fret. I suppose I could order another, but I didn't really love the instrument enough as a whole to pursue that.

I wonder what's up with Musician's Friend because the BB424 & 425 are marked for a sell, like they are going to stop carrying them? Since this is a new model, and they seem to sell well, I don't understand it.

Either way, I can see me buying a BB425, Yamaha is always killer bang form the buck quality!:bassist:

I had considered the BB414 at some point, and I thought it looked a little naked without a pickguard. But looking at the BB424X, I am not sure it looks better with one.

Why didn't they reuse the old BB pickguard with the old school Interstate sign shape? It suits the sharper (compared to Fender) body shape of the BB. The old BB1000 pickguard looks like its designed for the bass, the BB424X pickguard looks like a Frankenbass. :(

Link Removed

I like the old BB pickguard much better as well.

Where is the discount found?

It's still on sale for $499. MF has a full set of pictures in four colors featuring the back, and front, and some closeups. The BB425 really looks nice! I know that it is the budget version compared to the BB1025X and the BB2025X, but like all Yamahas, the fit and finish looks amazing!

I really want to see if I can get one of these over the summer.
The white version is something I could really see myself playing!:bassist:

Bump for an answer to the bridge question...

Can anyone that owns a BB425 confirm the bridge design? I saw a pic of a nice high-mass bridge posted earlier in the thread, but the Yamaha website shows a much more vintage looking bridge on the 425s.

Thanks for the info!

Bob

Oh okay. I would of figured that they're passive.

The front 4 denotes Passive. If it is a 6, it is Active. The last number is the number of strings.

414, 424 are passive 4 strings.
415, 425 are passive 5 strings.

614, 615 are active 4 and 5 strings. The consensus seems to be that they are pretty decent pre-amps considering the price. Most active basses of that price range have crappy pre-amps.

I am not sure if there are 624, 625 coming.
