Gary, I honestly think a large part of the Nordstrand sound is the pickups. As I have said to Adrian before, I do not know what it is exactly, but most importantly I know it sounds and feels good. I think any decision you make will be a winning decision.

Justin, you have totally made the right decision. I guarantee you are not going to be looking to add a preamp to your bass at ANY time. It is all there.

Dean, glad you gave Jay a call per my recommendation. He is a great guy and very knowledgeable about the Nordstrand pickup line. I send all of my pickup requests his way as I do not sell the pickups.

Lastly, here is a photo of the VJ4 in oly white with Tort guard.

Man! That Vj5 in Tort/Oly White is the stuff dreams are made of! Takes my breath away. (That is a particularly nice piece of tort, or faux tort ...whatever it is) Wow!

How different sounding are the NJ style pickups versus the Fatstacks/Big Splits? The narrow vintage sytle PU lends such a sweet, cool, vintage vibe. Gary

As classy as the white pearl pickguard is on your OlyWhite/Rosewood Vj5, I think the Tort Pickguard will push it over the top. The Tort guard on an Oly White body has always "popped" for me in a good way! You're my here Dan.

Can you tell me the layout of your Audere Knobs are? Which knobs if any are Pull Up Switches and what do they activate/deactivate?

Man ... I am Sooooo close ordering up a Cool Vintage vibe Vj5 in passive. I think I'll go Ash/Braz Rosewood. And who knows, it might even look like yours Dan!

Yeah the tort guard looks great. Carey said I would
have to pull the neck off to change the the white guard
on the black one. :eek: It might take me a while to get
up the nerve to pull the neck off this one and put
the tort guard on it.

The controls are:

Volume
Z Mode Switch
Mid/Pickup Pan
Coil Tap Switch
Treble/Bass

When they sent me the extra (black pickguard) for
my Nordy "Geddy" I thought they didn't finish cutting it.:o
Carey e-mailed me and said the end of the guard fits
under the end of the Finger board and I would have to take
the neck off to get it under the F/B extension. I still
have not changed the black one yet.

Maybe Carey or Stew will jump in here and explain this
a little better.

I recall it being very bright and zingy. I will admit to being very stuck on the Sadowsky tone and it didn't sound like that. I also admit that I also don't know much about the preamp and when I didn't hear what I liked I put it in bypass mode. Loved that.

I am hoping to get a hold of one to try for a longer period of time. I will give the Audere another (and more fair) shot. I'd be interested to hear why some folks are using what appears to be the J-Retro in the Nordy's.

Also, what is this new preamp that Carey had made like? I have an emailinto Stew and the boys. Maybe I will call them tomorrow.

I thought it might be something like that. Never heard of it. I'm kinda glad you don't have the tort guard on, b/c I would be totally drooling if I saw that. Hard enough on me with this guard.

I wasn't aware the Audere has an Active/passive switch? Or Bypass? Does it really?

The Audere preamp uses a 4 pole switch to go from active to passive.

Most preamps use a 2 pole switch. So the common pots with the push/pull switch on the bottom will not work as an A/P for an Audere preamp.

The extra switching poles are needed in the Audere because our Z-Mode pickup loading is more complex than a simpler tone control feature which can be enabled/disabled with a 2 pole switch.

To date we have not wired up any preamps with a push/pull pot of any type. Someone else might have...

That is the bass. I will still give the preamp another chance. I have already talked to Carey and Stew about a bass or two.

Can anyone compare the Sadowsky P5 pickup to Carey's? I am dying to know the tonal differences.

My vJ5 has the proto for this preamp installed, and I recently sent it back to Carey so that they can 'reverse engineer' the preamp (the fellas at Homebrew couldn't remember every detail of this one off) and make it on a circuit board. :)

Thanks for the clarification. I am still stoked about my Vj5 on order! And I still officially want another one! Color me GAS-ious! I may very well opt for the Vj5 twin of that passive Oly White/Rosewood Vj4 Scott has. Mmmm. That color and streaking on that fingerboard is off the hook!

Any reason not to choose Ash/Rosewood opposed to Alder/Rosewood? Then again, I don't have an Alder bass and I might just love it. Hmmm. Gary

I have a Nordy VJ5 with a P/J set-up, passive, Unfortunately I do'n't have a Sadowsky with a P5 in it but I have a Sadowsky NYC P/J 4 string. Unfortunately it does not have a VTC on it, So I can't tell you the exact difference. I don't know if Roger's P5 and P4 sound (or have the same specs) alike.

However, Carey's P5 has an even, meaty tone that is well balanced. It sounds like a classic James Jamerson P sound with a little more bite, not treble but upper mid bright. Round sound when solo'ed by itself. Thick low's for Reggae, Country, and Blues. Then when you add the Jazz pickup, it's defintely heaven. Jazz and Funk with tone to spare.

I would think the 34.5 inch scale makes the difference. It probably is the pick-up and the extra scale that creates the huge sound. It cuts real nice in a live situation, huge not muddy. Carey you could probably comment/elaborate on your pick-up (P5) and the scale length (34.5) better than I can.

I have the V/V/T set-up, for the in between tones/sounds that exist when you back off the opposing volume. I 've been partial to this bass since I received it in December. (Thank You SCOTT PAZERA)

I love the Sadowsky P4 in my P/J. It also has a nice balance but again it's a P4 and the Nordy is been my fav bass for the last six months hands down. It's seen more airtime than my 62 Jazz or my 68 Pbass.
