Today I was jamming with some mates. It was my first opportunity to crank my SVT CL head. I ran in to some trouble....
Whenever I would push the master volume above three, I would start to smell smoke or burning plastic coming out of the fan after a few minutes, and eventually the Standby/Power/Fault light started to flash red and my sound was cut off.
I dont really know much about the history of this head, other than its made in Vietnam, I bought it used, it's been on tour multiple times before, and the tubes say "6550WE Sovtek" on them. Not sure if they're stock or not.
Im currently searching for a local tech to take a look at this issue. Until then, does anyone have any clue what might be up with my SVT?

It sounds like a bad tube in the power amp chassis. Possibly also a blown power tube screen resistor.
Take a peek in the back of the amp. See if the tubes show any signs of distress. Do any of the tubes have a whitish-gray looks power on the inside of the glas, look burnt, or have a broken glass envelope?

yay got my SVT-II PRO back from Dave Ryan @ Killer Vintage. Lots of bad connections had developed and one of the 12au7 tube sockets was causing intermittent connection issues and all sorts of nasty noise.

Very nice rig. I have been looking for a bass holder like you have for my rig. Can't seem to find one. Do they not make these anymore?

I don't think they do. The www.basshanger.com is shut down. A good idea but very much a niche product.
I'm going to ask my machine shop if they can make one for me. I'll report if I can get those guys to do it. Thanks Jimmy.
It would be very easy to make one, you just need a regular guitar hanger, and a piece of metal bent to attach it to. Then coat the metal bar with some sort of rubberized coating so it doesn't scratch anything.
Any shop would have the machines/tools to make you the bar. Then just add the hanger.

I'll second that, I was only charged 1 hour of labor. Hell as far as I'm concerned it takes an hour to take a part and put back together alone.
Anyway, as you can see this is quite a large club. As before, post pictures and/or descriptions of your Ampeg gear and I'll respond with club numbers in thread. Let's see some more gear!

Ampeg SVT-CL w/ 810
Ampeg old flip-top 115 amp. I Just acquired this unit for a song. Needs some TLC, about to embark on a project.

Is there a website somewhere where I can learn about the technical details of the 70's SVT? When I bought mine, the guy said it was a "V9" and then explained what this meant, but I forgot what he said. My standby switch is on the back of it, and I think that had something to do with it.
