Showing some pec development!

I started lifting at 60kg (120lb?) and im at 71kg (142lb?) now. Im aiming at 80kg, gaining weight is easier now that im used to eating more.

I am currently trying to improve my overall health and strength, and as part of that, I started doing some fairly light weightlifting again. I never really got into this heavily, and I don't really expect to now. This is in large part due to my age, 59, and the fact that I am basically lazy. However, I do have a question. When I first started to lift again, I tried to keep the weights reasonable for my age and fitness - about 100 lbs. (a little more for bench presses, less for curls). On the bench presses I started getting a kind of burning pain in my left shoulder (outside top). If I lower the weight more, I get less pain, but it seems less of a workout. Should I lower the weight, or decrease the number of lifts? I.e., which is the better way to approach this issue? I was doing a single group of 10 lifts and I am now doing two sets of 5. Should I instead drop the weight and do more sets, and if so, how many reps per set? Is the pain due to damage or should I just work through it? Thanks in advance for any advice.

A good one to go into is the "starting strength" routine, which is 5x5 lifts.

I'm not so sure about this shoulder thing tho.

- Do you warmup and stretch before lifting?
- Do you have any past shoulder injuries?

I'd lay off anything that is causing the sensation for a couple weeks and see if its still there when you go back. Maybe check with someone else aswell. I'd also try doing it for a while with just the barbell to get "in the groove", let your body get used to the movement again.

Otherwise I'd lower the weight to the point where there isnt any pain and then slowly work up from there.

It's hard to judge, it may just be your body reacting to excersise (feel the burn and all that), but generally your chest should be reacting before your shoulder does (though granted, the deltoids are a relatively delicate muscle group).

If you are wanting overall health and strength make sure to have plenty of compound lifts :) .

Not really any help here, sorry!

I've got one, you have two things you screw into the doorframe which the bar slots into and it keeps it steady. It's never broken on me.

If you don't want to have to screw into the doorframe you could try those ones which you just put into the top bit, I can't remember what they are called.

Is the pain due to damage or should I just work through it? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sounds like the lifting is irritating the shoulder, and there's always the chance that if you keep on working through it, it won't go away. I'd guess it's because it's been a while since you last lifted, or it could have something to do with your form. I'd give it a short rest, then restart with low weights for a few weeks, to give the shoulder some time to get used to lifting. Also, you could try using a wider grip and landing the bar on your lower chest. A good shoulder warmup, including some rotator cuff work, might help.

By the way, I think it's excellent that you decided to start lifting again. You maybe can't do as well as the younger guys, but I'm sure you'll see some very noticeable improvement over time.

Stalled on squats yesterday at 50kg, stalled on the 3rd rep on my first set. I didn't really get enough sleep the night before so I'm gonna sleep up over the weekend and try it again.

I felt so knackered afterwards that I just gave up the rest of the day, no way I could've kept going.

Make sure to keep the sleep up. I'm in the midst of studying, so sleep cycle is somewhat gash at the moment.

Gonna keep at the gym lightly over the next month til these finals are over. Will keep up at home with what DB's I have here aswell (only up to 25Kg ea tho).

Planning a new routine for going back at it.

Squats are starting to come on BJ, how many reps/sets you doing at the mo?
