Picked it up, after unwrapping it for a year, I finally got it out, tuned her up, and WOW! The OE tuners, I forgot how annoying those are, lol. But, once it was in a rough sembalance of 'in tune', god! The tone is, possibly (and more a/b-ing is required for a final verdict) but possibly better than it's fretless twin that caused me to buy this one in the first place! I think it has the original pots in it, and what a range! The most noticeable tone knob I have ever heard. With it rolled all the way back, it becomes flat and kinda dull, and all the way up it sparkles like a diamond in the desert sun. But there's alot of good space in the middle, and I am in love. I do need to reglue the nut, as it is loose (just like my other one was) and it needs a setup BAAAAD, and new strings, but wow.
Yes, it has the signature Hondo FretBuzz, but I think a setup will take care of the worst of it. Besides, if you can play one of these with no buzz, you will have some serious man hands.
Gotta go, but that is my short review after an all too short 30 min eval. Pics comming after work.

Nice, good work! That thing is a monstrosity, and I mean that in the best sense of the word.

I like the use of Thumb rests on either side of the bridge. Do they serve a function, or are they simply for aesthetics?

You're really making me want to get on the ball about fixing up my Hondo!

thanks, yes, it's monster alright. The thumb rests are functional (like a tug bar, but at the bridge). But in all honesty, it was for aesthetic purposes. I goofed up on the bridge placement and needed to cover up some holes :ninja:

Oh yea, and when I set my bass down, I can lay my pick in between the bridge saddle and the thumb rest

It's a tone monster alright, the Ernie Ball strings I put on her really make her shine.

Anybody know anything about my wonderful Hondo, serial No 1060402 made in Japan, good neck , twangy sound with stadium elite strings, bought it off a mate for £40 cause I could play it left handed with out looking a complete plonker, weighs a ton and built like Hitlers bunker, the only name on it apart from the Hondo logo is professional. Changed the original light yellow pickups for Seymour Duncan quarter pounders which made no difference at all
Does this entitle me to join the club? what Number am I?

I think you are # 8. or #9. something like that. lol. whichever one is not already in someones sig on this thread, I guess.
And sorry, I don't know much about that particular line, In fact, I originally started this to get information, as well as tell the story of My poor abused baby. Who now has a friend. But I keep them in seperate cases, cause I don't wanna come home one day and find a bunch of baby hondo's hopping all over the place. Would a baby hondo be a six string I wonder? lol

Longtime lurker - first time poster here.

Not only do I still own the Hondo II P-bass copy that I bought in 1983 (I was 14), it has been moved about seven times, stored in musty basements (and in a soft shell case, no less), and more or less neglected for the past 15 years, while I started a family, went to grad school, and built a career (not anything related to music).

About a year ago, when my youngest daughter (aged 8) decided she wanted to learn to play the guitar, I hired an old bandmate to teach her lessons and bought a 1/2 size acoustic six-string at the local music store for her. That inspired me to start playing again, so I pulled the Hondo out of storage, brought it into that same shop for a cleaning and some small repairs (the input jack had this annoying hum). About $25 lighter and three days later, I walked out with a usable instrument. The tech guy even commented that, for a cheap copy instrument, it had decent electronics and a solid body. I've never had any issues with the neck, which is perfectly straight.

Now, I'm playing in a cover Southern/Classic Rock/Country cover band (not exactly my taste in music, but that's what the bars and clubs around here pay people to play), and this Hondo II is actually my main bass. Eventually, I will upgrade to something with better electronics, and I also keep a Yahama active 5-string and a Rogue 8-string (now there is a cheaply-made bass!) on hand for backup and occasional variation in sound. However, this thing is like the Energizer Bunny - it just keeps going and going. I run it through a Digitech multi-effects box into a Yorkville 400W bass head and a customized 2x10 cab, and the sound is not muddy (the effects help - I remember in high school having real problems with this "sludgy" sound, but I was also running it through a cheap Holmes combo amp [which I also still have]).

I've attached some pics (yes, I put DR Black Beauty coated strings on it - besides the visual effect on the cream body and black pickguard, they're easier on my fingers). So, may I join this humble (but growing) club/cult?

I used a Hondo pro II bass in the early 90's It was a very good bass and one of the few instruments I miss having. I used it live with a folk band and for recording. I'll have to find photo's!

here we are. from an insurance picture.

The sunburst one is all original except for the covers and knobs (have the origonal knobs elsewhere). I brought it back to life after someone trashed it. You can see the before and after pics on my myspace page Link Removed

The black one is all original and super!!!!!!!!!!!!!! clean. with original case, hang tags, and setup sheet to take proper care on "The Hondo".
