Regarding the B on a 30" scale, you're absolutely right. I'd never played a 30" 5 string so I didn't know what to expect. However, the stock strings did have a pretty good B string, which is what I was comparing the other strings to. The sound and feel was pretty similar to the one on my previous 34" Carvin.

Old thread, but would you mind telling me more about the Toneformer preamp? I have an Elwood-L series that I love, with the Delano preamp and Times Square pickups. I am spec'ing out another build, and this one is going to have Nordstrand Big Singles. I will likely go Delano again, but I like that the Toneformer offers the passive tone control even when active, like on my Sadowsky pre's (VTC) and my John East pre's. Anything you can tell me about the toneformer would be great. Tone, noise level if any, etc.

I am liking my Elwood more and more each and every time I play it. I have had a Marleaux Tonwerk preamp delivered recently and boy, what a killer tone! I still enjoy the fully passive sound of the bass, but with this preamp it's just pure bliss... dead quiet as well.
This bass has been one of my best bass-related purchases ever, no doubt about it.

Delano JC 4 HE/M2, neck and bridge. They're great.
I am a single coil man, I truly hate the sound of humbuckers. The Delanos are actually split-coil humbucking pickups but with a very narrow sensing area, just like a single coil - that's what their website says. They definitely sound like single coils to me, with just the tinniest of hints of the nasally humbuckers tone, something I have no problem with and like I said I hate humbuckers.
Best of both worlds really as they sound like single coils but are completely quiet.
I initially wanted to go for Aguillars when I was ordering but the exposed pole pieces put me off, so I went for the Delanos.

It's funny, coz I've got Aguilar AG5J-HC (hum cancelling then) on my Elwood, and while they sound good, I'm not 100% satisfied of the sound and I've been tempted to get the 5 string version of your pickups, I'm used to the single coil sound but I want them silent :D . And I like the look without exposed pole pieces).

Note: I kinda knew what pickup models you had, just wanted a confirmation :)

Heh, AG4JHC were the ones I wanted to order :) I really liked the sound of them on the few youtube videos I found... but one of my techniques is picking "flamenco style" and when I'm using it the bridge pickup serves as a ramp, so exposed pole pieces are not good for me. Judging by your comment I am glad I didn't order them as I am obsessed with dead silent basses. With the delanos I can sit a foot away from my desktop PC and there's no static noise picked by the bass whatsoever. I'd say go for it and order them somewhere online, you can always send them back if you don't like them.

Let me rephrase it: I said "I like single coils but I want them silent": the Aguilars are dead quiet! I wouldn't want to change them for that coz they do their job in that regard. They just don't sound like true single coils, which in a way is normal as they're not single coils :)

but if you said that the Delanos are closer to the single coil sound while being silent, then I could be interested.

I have had the AG4JHC in 2 different basses and they are dead quiet :thumbsup: sounds great (to my ears).

I put them in a Squier VM Fretless Jazz (posted in the classifieds) and made it sound pretty darn good :)

Well, I am a single coil freak and I really liked the sound of the Aggies on youtube, so I find your comment a bit surprising. I was thinking of ordering them and asking Adrian for custom made pickup covers so the pole pieces wouldn't be exposed. The Delanos were a cheaper option and less hassle too.
I don't know what to advise you. I'll be honest, when I plugged the Elwood in for the very first time, I could hear a tiny little bit of that humbucking midrange sound that I hate and started thinking I had made a mistake... Now the Delanos seem to be perfect for me. I don't think I will ever even start considering changing them.

Delano makes two different styles of open-pole hum canceling J pickups -- a conventional looking type with two poles per string, and the type with one large pole per string. They also make a type with one blade per string.
