The Official MTD USA Thread

Also, I wanted to share this!

I thought it was cool anyhow. :)
I haven't seen one with exactly the same coloring.

Lynn's has J/J pickups though, AND 24 frets, which is what I want my next 535 to have!

...AND... I THINK she also has a crazy short scale like 32". I think I remember Mike talking about this one.

If it looks "normal" on her, then that probably IS the 32" scale one! :D

It's good to know at least he'll put J/J's in a 535. Or, did in that one specific instance...

OH, if you don't mind saying, did your red 535-24 stay on the forum or go off?

Yeah if she's the woman I'm thinking of, the reason it's such a short scale is because she's really short and has particularly small hands. Plus, it's the only USA MTD with the eclipse/x3x body style I've (at least personally) seen with J style pickups.

It sold. :)

I'm now a three 535 kinda' guy, and frankly, I still feel very well covered. :)

Just thought I'd pass along a tidbit of info I just got last week from Mike regarding the rebranding of the USA J5.

It's now called the "Saratoga 5 USA".

Yes, there was an import model by this exact same name, which is a totally different bass, and is also discontinued.

However, Fender, as time goes on, is getting nastier about people using J/Jazz bass, P/Precicion, etc, and Mike just doesn't even want to deal with the potential of a headache on this. Also, he had to assign that product name to something current to keep it registered.

So if anyone happened to see the USA J5 labeled as the "Saratoga 5 USA", such as on the perfectbass.com's site, and been confused by it (as I was), that's the story. :)

Good to know!
Has the body been reshaped any, or any of the design from the original few produced been revamped?

I would love a J/J from him in the future, but his neck on the 535 is what sells me. I would need something the same or darned near similar!

The original prototype I had didn't have a bellycut, and they do now. Other than that, and maybe a little more rounding on the horns, I believe the body shape is still pretty much the same. If you go to the perfect bass website, they have some great multi-angle pics.

Oh yeah, great! Just what I needed! Hi-res photos! :D

Hi Mtd/Tobias Lovers!!!!!!!!!!

I almost read the entire thread, you have great and beautiful instruments!
Just to show you my 2 babies!

Tobias pre-gibson classic 5 zebrawood top/wenge tone plate/alder body with paoferro board. Really low medium and growly with the typical Tobias high.

Both killer. I've seen them before and drooled. :)

I am quite surprised you saw the Tobias...as i live in France and the bass is almost 20 years old. Can you tell me how you met both my instruments? :)
Maybe you are speaking about another but similar models?
Thanx!
Ok, then I've seen a similar one if you've never posted a pic of it before. I remember a bass very similar from th another thread... I think the one dedicated to the old pre-Gibson USA Tobias basses. Also, I didn't mean to say, by "seen" I'd seen it (or one like it I suppose) in person. Just pictures. Same thing on the 535... just pictures. :)

Just wanted to drop in and say hi. I was the lucky one that picked up Vic's 535. My first MTD! Even after reading all the praise about these basses, it has totally lived up to my high expectations. It is truly a special bass in every way. Thanks again, Vic! Phase four is complete! :)

I haven't taken my own pics yet, so I hope Vic doesn't mind if I post one of his.

Salut Georges, merci pour l'accueil!

Well i need more time to give you a true feedback.

But right now i am in love of couse with the Mtd.
As string space is wider on the Mtd, it seems easier to play and the preamp is more versatile. And it is lightier!.
But the Tobias has such a "splendide lutherie". I feel i have 2 different bass. Only the neck remains the same, i guess.
