The Official MTD USA Thread

I was just over at the Sadowsky forum and it's been interesting hearing from people who felt that their MTDs sounded great at home but got "lost in the mix" when it came to band settings. I've definitely noticed that my ash/ash/maple doesn't cut as well as my ash/wenge, but the ash/wenge couldn't cut through any better than it does! I have, however, noticed a tendency with certain "full range" (if that makes sense) modern-sounding basses - they sound rich and beautiful on their own but just disappear in live performance settings. Any thoughts?

I have an Ash/Ash/Maple MTD 535, and have done 100's of gigs with it, never have had an issue of it cutting through the mix. Other than the woods, the next contributing factor is your usage of the mid range control. The mid range control does not need major adjustment before you hear how it effects the tone of the bass. I too have read those threads; don't put much stock in those broad comments about MTD's or any other bass; there are so many contributing factors that determine whether a bass cuts through the mix or not.

Mike does it again!!!......Walnut burl/ash/maple/ebony.
love that snappy clicky ebony sound produced on maple. As always it feels smooth and sounds great! Here's a pic for ya'll to enjoy.

Let's here it...

Bueller... Bueller?

Ha ... Anyone? :hiding:

Sadowski external preamp...adds lots of fluffy, woofy bottom end, and muddifies the midrange, like all cheap preamps do...Mike's preamp in the MTD's are enough...and if you want to amplify one of these monster basses, do it properly with a GOOD preamp. The Sadowski is a mediocre preamp.

Cheers,
Cameron

I just picked up another 535 in a trade. I haven't had a chance to plug her in yet but, just like all of Mike's children, she sure looks pretty! Black limba with a mac ebony top and a wenge/wenge neck. I'll post some pictures later.

IMHO, it's not mediocre, it's just specifically targeted... and in particular, at something about as far away from what an MTD does as I can imagine. I think they work great... in a Sadowsky. :)

Not the internal ones...different beast.

And as far as preamps go, the external ones are mediocre, compared to a Summit, or a Millenia, etc. Not bad for a $200.00 battery powered contraption, but in the bigger world of preamps, completely mediocre. As to my post being 'bizarre'...read it again. I wasn't talking about the onboard Sadowski stuff.

Sheesh....tough crowd. The question was what an OFFBOARD EXTERNAL Sadowski preamp sounds like with an MTD, and having had one for quite a few months, I VOICED MY OPINION...fluffy, woofy, and completely mediocre.

Sincerely,
Cameron

the internal and external pres are the same circuit

when you hook a second preamp up to something that already HAS an internal preamp, the sound doth suckage a greate deele unless it's a really good one. And I repeat, on the grand scheme of preamps, which cost from $.05 to $100,000.00 or more, the $200.00 battery powered Sadowski is completely mediocre. It certainly adds NOTHING of any value to the one already in an MTD aside from woof, fluff, and midrange muddification, and kills the dynamic range quite a bit. To get something better, you have to spend quite a bit more...I had one and sold it...I also had the almighty Aguilar DI, which, as preamps go, was far better, even though it technically wasn't a preamp. I sold it, too.

Last I'll comment on this...Sadowski fanboys...

I am thinking to buy Sadowski outboard preamp, but from your experience now I was
