The Official MTD USA Thread

I'm not worried about it! I just never seen one get THAT Glossy... could just be the pic though I dunno...

(not that there is anything wrong with it)...

still bet its a fast as hell neck!
Ahh, ok. Yeah, to me, one of the things I like most about Mike's basses is the asym neck. They just feel great. :)

Agh, Jeez. I *definitely* want to hear soundclips of that. That burst looks positively solar.

...and I may have to download those pics for when I win the lottery and order one for myself.

Thanks man. Yes, she's a pretty one. I had Mike use as much yellow in the middle as possible to give it that really big, bold burst effect.

It also came in at 9 lbs even.

9 lbs is nice. I'm good up to about 9 or *maybe* 9 1/2 lbs. North of that, I have trouble wearing one throughout a night's gig without regretting it in the morning.

Jebus, I sound like a geezer...

Geezers unite! I'm in the same camp. 9 LBS is my limit. My Sadowskys have spoiled me. The slightly heavier pieces of Tulipwood seem to work better to my ears though than the uber light ones -- So this works well for me.

Wow, that's gotta' be the "heaviest" tulip bass I've heard of... and just as you commented later, IMHO, that's a good thing for this wood combo. Gee... I wonder how you managed to luck into that piece of tulip... it's almost like you could've hand selected it yourself from the pile at Mike's shop... hmmmmm... ;) :D

ok... First recording session with this bass in the studio tonight... Sounded great! BUT!

Maybe I am just so used to Neck Through basses...

In between takes while standing on its strap, I noticed if I pushed forward just slightly on the neck, I heard a slight wood friction creek sound, and then pulled back on the neck is made the sound too.

I remember hearing this on my old old older Jazz bass but I figured that was because I took the neck off so many times it was just worn...

Does MTD leave a sliiiiiiight bit of room in the neck? is this normal?

Where I bought the bass is so close, Ill swing by there later in the week just to make sure...

But what do you MTD Masters think? am I just being paranoid?

Not sure about US made MTDs, but my Kingston Heir made that slight wood creek when I push the neck forward attempting to make a 'vibrato' effect for a harmonic note. When I pull the neck backwards, no such sound was heard. It only happens when I push it forward. My other basses never made such sound... Now I'm starting to worry as well :(

Agree on this. If it is not tight, the vibration might not be well transferred (slightly absorbed or lost in between gaps). Do you have similar problem with your MTDs or any of your bass Vic?
Are you asking if my bolt-on necks move around on me? If so, no. :)

Regarding the neck pockets on MTDs: ideally the neck won't move in its pocket. There are three possible causes for the "creaking" that I can think of: there's a bit of a gap on one or both sides of the pocket (although this alone would not necessarily result in any noises being produced); the neck bolts need tightening; the "bottom" of the neck pocket (where the bolts connect to the neck) is not perfectly level. This last possibility was actually an issue on one of my MTDs and the result was a creaking noise whenever I'd put any pressure on the neck. I had Mike fix it but any competent luthier could have done the job. These types of things can happen when we're talking about hand-made basses. While some people expect "perfection" in a hand-made instrument the truth is that there are so many details that can be accidentally overlooked when it's one or two guys doing the work.

When I was 22, I could wear a big old Thunderbird all night and not even notice. Not any longer. But I find that heavier wood sounds beefier. I'm willing to entertain the possibility that it's all in my head.

Yup... One of the neck bolts was just a little bit loose... Guys at the Bassexchange tightened it up and its all good now...

After dropping that many folding bills on something, I didn't exactly want to start adjusting stuff myself just yet...

So all is even better than before now... yay :D
