The Official MTD USA Thread

Guys,

I think I have read somewhere that Mike T. prefers medium weight ash to a light weight ash for his basses. I think swamp ash MTDs are a rare "species". Anyone knows why? Other manufactures uses swamp ash extensively and it worked fine.
Yeah, he likes the sound better. IMHO heavier ash bodies to have a bit more compression and sustain, whereas the lighter ash bodies tend to have a bit more punch and less ring. He's made a few light ash basses like you said, but they're rare because the pieces of lighter ash that behave the way he wants are kinda' hard to find.

Thanks for the input Vic. Did Mike use swamp ash on your light weight walnut-ash MTD?

My next MTD will have a swamp ash body. I wanted something lighter and less "grindy" sounding than northern ash tends to be. I spoke with Mike and we discussed one of David Dyson's basses (that I like the sound of) and he told me the body was made from swamp ash. I thought, "Great - now all I need are David's fingers to go along with that and I'll sound exactly the way I want to". :D

Sounds great. What's the wood combo?

Swamp ash with a quilted maple top, wenge neck and board. Here's a shot of the top wood:

I'm not typically a fan of quilted maple but Mike had some great "specimens" in stock and this one just spoke to me. The finish will be natural.

Oh man, I'm a SUCKER for a great quilt, and that most certainly is one! Great choice on body woods too... I love the maple topped ash body.

The neck, well... we need to talk... ;) :D :D :D :D

I figured you'd disapprove, Vic :spit: :D That's okay - at least Tom's still being reasonable. :smug: :D
What? Reasonable? You want people to be reasonable?? You do remember this is a web forum, right? ;) :D :D :D :D

Ok, ok, all BS set aside, of all the wenge neck'd MTDs I've played, including Tom's and some at NAMM shows, by far, the ash bodied ones were my faves, so good call!!

Is that a Vic wenge blessing in writing?! I never thought I'd see the day! ;) :D :D
