The Official MTD USA Thread

As I've gotten a chance to put this bass through it's paces, I realize that it's inherently warm and punchy tone is better covered by my Sadowsky PJ5. I'm looking for a little bit more variety in my stable and would LOVE to snag an MTD 635-24 with an ash neck/body. Basically a grindy/punchy slap machine to compliment the thick chocolate that is my alder/braz rw PJ5.

Hey Joel, do you still have that buckeye 635 and, if so, how are you liking it?

I do have it. I love it -- It's one of my favorite MTD's ever. I'm really fickle and can ususally tell in five minutes whether it's a personal keeper. They're all good but some aren't for me personally.

With all that said, I've probably played it for a total of one hour. It's been sitting in a case ever since. Kind of a shame but I sort of knew that going into it. My main gig these days is all about straight J-bass five strings...

I'm OK with that though. This bass will have it's day!

Very nice. Buckeye's not my top choice for a top wood, but it sure can look classy. I find that whether or not I like a burl top depends heavily on the bass.

Thanks for the response, Joel - glad you're enjoying the bass (one way or another :)).

After some careful thought I've decided that I'm happier with 21 frets and am, therefore, putting up this wonderful 535 up for sale. I haven't posted a general ad here on TB yet as I wanted to give the club members a heads up.

-macassar ebony top w/ matching truss rod cover and headstock veneer
-wenge neck/fingerboard
-24 frets

I'm not sure of the exact weight but I'm guessing it's around 9.4 lbs (I'll weigh the bass tomorrow). It's pretty light for an MTD (and I've sold basses because they were too heavy - for me 10 lbs or over is too much). The bass is in outstanding condition. Not a blemish on it that I'm aware of. There's only one thing that I would point out in the interest of full disclosure. Ebony is notorious for being a stubborn wood, especially when it comes to the type of winters we have up here in Quebec. The top wood on this bass moved ever so slightly during the winter, revealing the glue line down part of the centre of the top (where the two halves of the top join). I personally took the bass to Mike because I wanted the finish to be perfect, and to see what he had to say. He told me the movement of the wood was minor (only the very top part of the ebony had moved) and that it was no big deal to fix. He fixed her up as good as new and, as far as Mike is concerned there's nothing to worry about.

I'd be looking for $3000 plus half the shipping costs. The only trades I would consider would be for a 21 fret 535 (no maple fingerboards!) in similar condition. Shipping to Canada and the U.S. only.
