The Official MTD USA Thread

I wonder if anyone in this thread owns this bass. It’s my old one and would love to buy it back

Why are the differences between the standard barts and the super 5 pickups? Are they pickups you can order from Bartolini or just through mtd?
Both sets are proprietary, but MTD seems more willing to sell the super stuff to people aftermarket. The standard MTD pickups are super low z, reverse p pickups that are run with a buffer into an MTD spec NS3 variant preamp. The super pickups are more traditional (no buffer) dual coil pickups wound to MTD specs and paired to an HR5.2 NTMB+F preamp.

Very informative! Would you consider the stock Bartolini classic series soapbar to be a similar sound? I don’t know much about Bartolini as I primarily use emgs.

That makes sense, based on other basses I’ve owned that had the NTMB+F preamp. The 400/800 mid frequency control is a feature of that pre, I believe.

I really like the coil switching feature of the Super pickups. Does anyone happen to know if you can use the Super pickups with the standard pre with the 250/500/1K mid switch?

Sure you can - you'd just bypass the separate stereo buffer module and use 250k blend pot rather than 25k. Or just use the buffer and stock blend anyway and have a high output bass with active blend. No passive bypass though.

Or you could just add a 3rd switch to the super preamp if all you're after is the 3-way mid control.

Daniel wanted the MTD Super pickups to have more of (what he calls) a "throwback" tone while still sounding in brand with MTD, so the Super pickups are made a bit different than the stock Bart stuff. The EMG HZ pickups are honestly a more similar sound to the super pickups IMO.
