Cool - I briefly owned a '85 Fire-glo 2003 w/the reversed tr access, double pg and screwed down bridge-end. It was a restoration project. It had body binding and triangle fb markers - I didn't know it was offered w/no binding and dot fb markers. It was years ago and I don't even have a pic!
Yep this bass is special it also sounds like 70s or even 60s rick not 80s... (it's very deep and woody, not sharp, even with rounds)..
some ricko experts told me it's common for 1st year production of any rick model to have parts from previous models or odd features. It might even be a prototype!

I liked mine Ok but I sold it for a profit at a time that the income was needed... we probably all have a story like this.
Well, I got my KB-24 back with its new flamed maple Jazz neck yesterday, and give or take a few minor things (I dropped and lost a bridge cover screw, and the guy who fit the neck went against my preferences and strung it with new rounds, albeit mild ones), it kinda just feels like home if home was significantly easier to play. Still like just about everything about it, and while I'd still take the original neck over the flame maple in terms of looks, I'm surprised how much I'm liking how the new one looks. I do like flame maple, it's just the old wood was so visually interesting with all the color bands.
I will say I do really like the feel of the finish, it's somewhere between satin and gloss, and it's just right for me. The old neck was super-gloss, which I didn't have a problem with at all either, just this one's slightly better. I think the only thing I'd do is print out a headstock decal and apply it, I already made one I think looks quite good. Also maybe seek out a pickguard with a rounded heel someday, since the KB-24's heel is squared and this neck isn't, so it has the ol' Strat neck in a Tele pocket gap. I'm keeping all the old parts in the case it came in, though, not throwing a single thing away.

I wanted a bass I could play at gay bars and not be called basic. My friend Michael Dolan crafted this for me. As you can see, Michael is off the hook talented.
Mission accomplished, that is stunning.
Since I already had an amber 4 string rhapsody, I took the black one, bought a dean one of a kind prototype lined four string fretless neck and put it on the black one. She's a beauty!
Took me a moment to work out what those actually were. Nice tops.
I don't gig gay bars... because I don't gig at all... but my bass playin daughter would absolutely LOVE that!

Guess I am not familiar with this bass and you say it is a Fender? What is an HS decal?
I think he added a Fender Meteora Pickup to this bass...

It's a custom bass using a Fender J body* & neck. 'HS' is head-stock, a hs decal that reads P/J. The P pu is an EMG Geezer Butler and the newly added bridge pu is from a more recent Fender Meteora double J hum-bucker. I built it 9yrs ago - it had a Fender Super 55 split-coil J pu at the bridge until today.
*Body is made of two slabs; a maple top and alder bottom with substantial chambering within. The neck is an AllParts Fender authorized 1 piece maple J.

I have had some really nice MIM’s, some not so nice American’s, and even one time ok Squiers. Play your bass proudly! That is the most meaningful that it does well for you, plays and sounds well! Hey I have had few Fenders I liked the pickup and didn’t change the pickup. I can think of only one, an American Special Jazz I wish I still had but had to sell to pay a bill. It was an in between MIM and American Standard. Made me sick to sell it. I have a 2017 American Professional Jazz and hated the pickups. The neck is good but wasn’t quite as good as the American Special. I once went to Guitar Center and a guy was wanting to buy his son a good bass and I asked could I play the used 2000 MIM Jazz. I played and handed it back to him and told him not to let that bass go. It was incredibly good sounding. He walked out with it.
