The control plate is actually custom cut black satin aluminum. I had the same thought, only in reverse—should have continued with a (matching edge) aluminum pg.

Explains the 'showroom condition' lol. Even what I could see of the neck and position dots made me think late 60's, at first possibly Guyatone or Matsumoku but the control plate, bridge and tailpiece are Tiesco. I love shark bodies for solids and now I need to hide my wallet...
