Saw this and was too curious, Im a sucker for ash bodies painted black so I bought it.
Had never heard of Goatrock before. Out of Ohio and seems to produce quality instruments, though he seems to be taking a break
Lightest bass Ive owned - If my cheapo bathroom scale is right- approx 7lbs
Plays well. Still getting to know it.
Pickups are made by Goatrock and all quality hardware

Love that neck, and the recessed lower knob. Is it passive? I only see two control knobs, is there a fader or balance, or just tone and volume, or perhaps one pot is stacked?

So, I am FAR from being an expert, so sorry if I am vague as I am learning it.
Passive yes

and a rotary knob that changes the tone of the bass, can't say (yet) what each does.

and a rotary knob that changes the tone of the bass, can't say (yet) what each does.

I see it now, missed the toggle switch before. Probably 3 position switch, selects bridge, neck or both p'ups.

Yup exactly. I may record sound clips so maybe I can be told what 'tones' it produces LOL, I'm not good at describing at all

I think he's referencing the spalted maple. I would not worry about it.

Looks like roasted birds eye maple to me. That or birds eye with a tinted finish. Doesn't look to be anything concerning in terms of stability (IMHO)

Highly figured necks tend to not be as stable as straight grained wood, so said Rick Turner (R.I.P.). He knew a thing or three about making great instruments.

I wonder if being torrefied helps in that regard...

Possibly, if the instability stems from moisture content changes, being torrefied would help. You basically accelerate the aging process so that it's almost inert before even cutting to shape... right?

I will say that it is the first bass where the neck made me pause a second du to the feel, I usually don't really pay attention right away to that.

Interesting - and how does it feel different? It appears to have a sheen so is it clear-coated?

it feels paper-ish, like not cheap or rough, but satin like that I haven't felt on a neck before, it's not negative just different
