And my final NBD post for a while, my birthday bass, 5 strings for the 50th...
- well its been a long time, but finally there's a new picture of my gremlin! My father-in-law changed out all the old crackly electronics with fancy new low-end chinese stuff, plus we switched the tuning pegs. He also cleaned it up nicely and installed the pickguard. He went with the original knobs because they fit better than his, I like the black knobs popping on the wood. It goes well with the black tuning pegs on the blonde headstock. Not bad for a craigslist project.
Stuck at home with a sick kid today, so in between reviewing resumes to hire some new staff, I took a few pics. Glare is free of charge.
Beautifull fretless/headless, build by my brother in law. What do you think?
I picked this up at my local music store. I didn't know much about it until I got it home and did some research on it.
It is a 1987 MIJ Jazz Bass Special. I don't know what it is worth, but it is a pretty cool sounding & playing bass!

My Warmoth Deluxe V family and couple of misc basses.

My own build----from a kit with several upgrades.
I call it the Kraken..... my goal was to recreate a Rickenbacker a freinnd of mines father owned back in the 70's it had been used and abused in his fathers band......then tossed aside and left in the back corner of a dank and musty basement in Ohio for many years......this has the look and feel, but with NEW pups and pots.

Nothing special. I just used my Squier VM 70s 5 string today and took a pic, so i thought I'd post it. It sounded and played great. BTW the pic was taken in an orchestra pit, so my SWR WM12 was the perfect complement.
edit: After posting, I realized there were a couple of mods. First, one of the saddles looked a little wonky, like one of the set screw holes was oblong. The screw didn't looks straight. So, I replaced the bridge with the Wilkenson, the one that has brass saddles.
Second, I replaced the tone control with a Elek-trix variable frequency doohicky. I didn't think the original tone control did much. I like the new thing, but I tend to leave it in one setting.

Oddly enough, the HB7's I got were not direct drop in. The screw hole pattern didn't line up exactly, so I wasn't going to force it. The stock tuners are perfectly in line and I know it's not the Hipshots that are wonky, so perhaps Squier changed their specs...I bought this one brand new 2016 a couple weeks ago. I'm kind of surprised because after all of my TB research, it's pretty much unanimous that the hb7's are drop in. So either Squier slightly changed their dimensions, or everyone who says they're direct drop ins is basically haphazardly screwing these things into their bass without much thought. The stock ones work well enough to where I'm not willing to plug and drill to make up for it.
