My two cents is I think hanging in a closet is a good idea. Keeps the dust off, direct contact away from the finish. Only downside is the foam on the hooks like the stands over an extended period of time leave a residue on the Volute. Don't feel the need to hang them all over the wall as that attracts dust and then there's the question of ultraviolet exposure (?).
As far as solvent fumes from the case or curing from the instrument poly or Nitro finish haven't had that experience but it warrants research. Otherwise seems the big concern would be temperature and humidity especially in the cases for long periods of time. The basses I play out regularly stay in gig bags in the living room otherwise my collectibles and customs stay in cases in the closet or under the bed. I do occasionally take them out, fiddle with them, take pictures or what not. But I don't think it's a good idea to leave them cloistered in their case for months or years on end. That can't be good. Is there another Forum discussion concerning these issues? Anyone? Thanks

Edit. Non- regularly played basses in cases: strings are loosened to keep tension off neck. Common sense.

Not at all. The truss rod is set to counteract fully tensioned strings and keep a straight neck. You loosen strings for long periods of time and you get neck warp from the natural action of the truss rod having no counter force to balance its tension.

I like this discussion, as I have a question. I bought an after-market for one of my Hofner basses. So it is made for 'violin' basses and not Hofners specifically. After storing it in this case for about a week I've discerned some buzzing when playing. It's not due to the action, as I adjusted that already. Is the case warping my neck?

Have you checked the nut? Are the strings comfortable in it?

Not loosening completely. Minor truss rod adjust can be done to compensate.
That's why I mentioned taking them out occasionally. Vintage Fenders, Gibson,
8 strings, '70's Fenders & MM, up to graphite (no truss) and custom extend range
and no neck warp/ fretboard issues. I've held this practice for many years with
good results. YRMV.

Hey Doc, if you haven't checked, the source of the buzz can be any of the following:

Loose pickguard
Loose or cracked pickup rings
Bridge thumbscrew not fully tightened to the top of the bridge

My Hofners have all experienced these three problems many times, it's frustrating finding the cause, but once you get used to checking these things it becomes no big deal. My guess is that when you put it in the case, it probably bumped the pickguard loose and now it's buzzing. Happens to me all the time!

I would add; What type of strings do you have on your Hofner? Do they have fabric at both ends? I've seen strings without fabric buzzing as they slightly touched the tailpiece (mostly by sitting in a case for a while as the plush pushed on the tailpiece)

Might not be related to your bass but my Gibson Les Paul used to buzz on some notes and it drove me crazy! Found out some saddles where sympathetically vibrating when playing a particular note, as they were loose. A drop of clear nail polish locked them into place.

I'm almost certain the ends all have fabric, but I'll check that out too.

Since saddles will always be staggered (E over 34"/G under or at 34") I gauge 34" at the A/D mid point. Added this 2008 Dean Hardtail Bass to my brood this past Monday.

I am really liking this. I was able to set the action quite low with the monolithic bridge system. Has flats which I thought was a bit odd of a choice for this bass by the previous owner.
