Played the MTD535 on left in Afghanistan, played the FBass BN5 in center in Germany (it's also my main practice bass), the 535 on the right was made for me by the man himself (I was practicing on THIS one just before posting these pics).

A one-off Dingwall Afterburner I with sound slash. I think the active AB II comes standard that way. And, finally, my only four-string:

New guy here and here is my humble arsenal. Back some time ago I actually played out, did some recording and had a much more impressive line up. For now this makes me happy as a closet player. Soon my Spector Rebop will join the family!

Went a bit overkill the last wee while but here they are.

3 Washburns, 2 Westones, a Bass Collection, 2 Retrovibes, 1 Harley Benton
a Dean Evo, Ibanez Mikro, Peavey Milestone, Shine VI and a Cort Curbow.

The above is a 1996 Japanese crafted Fender Jazz bass. it set me back £750 off EBay, it's had a few 'subtle' modifications done by the previous owner... I have no intent on reverting them though because it's got a hell of a lot of growl for a Jazz Bass... almost on par with an SBV!! the mods are:

modified bridge saddles
EMG active J-bass pickups with concentric pot for the tone controls (Bass & treble)
truss rod cavity made under scratch plate
battery compartment routed

other than that... and the fact I had to re-shim it because the old one had compressed under the pressure of the neck, it's serving me well!! sounds amazing for slap and pop... and easy to get a punchy tone out of!

then there's my first bass... this old sucker's my Tanglewood Rebel 4K, and boy has this thing been though a lot!! over the 4 years I've had it, it's had:

6 truss rod adjustments
a re-shim
5 intonation adjustments
3 fret re-dressings
4 control pots
2 buffings with T-Cut and compound

still sounds great... not as bright or punchy as the J-bass, it's a little more rounded and has a softer tone, but the one reason I own this bass is because of how robust it is!!, this thing's been dropped countless times, even on the headstock, and the only part to break was the tuning peg... which is a cheap and easy fix! other than that... unless you want me to show the behemoth of a rig that is my amp... then this is about it... although I plan to build one at some point!

On the really old Fenders (and the remakes of them) there's that little black thing that almost looks like a pickup below the strings. What is it, and why don't the newer basses have it?

AidanE are you referring to the "Rest" near the lower horn. If you are years back Monk Montgomery
plucked with his thumb so the "Rest" was for his fingers. Later when players were using fingers it was
moved above the E string becoming the " Thumb Rest ".
