I'll be seeking a # this weekend. I'm picking up, or rather rescuing, a well abused 'Vette Standard 5 (Ash, Nirvana Black) this Saturday morning. The former owner, I was told, was a hardcore kid who basically treated the bass like a pogo stick. It's got some buckle rash on the back of the body, a little chunk of ovangkol missing from the top of the headstock and most of the hardware screws and pickup screws are rusted silly. Why get it? It's super cheap and I've got a thing for bringing abused gear back from the grave. On another level, I kind of looked at Warwick with a mild disdain for years, but when I tried this bass, I was really stunned at the sinister Jazz-esque tone. I tried other Vette 5ers (ash and bubinga. passive and active) in the past and was less than impressed, but this one really spoke for some reason. I'll be gigging with it Saturday night as well so I'll really be getting to know it in a short amount of time. Anyway, got one crummy photo for now. Nicer ones to follow when I formally request the number.
Well, it's in my possession now, so here's a better pic. Does this make me #199?

I've had way too many 'wicks over the years, and I've finally settled on a nice vintage thumb (with primitive rockbag and original sticker!):
It's been thoroughly cleaned since the photos, and it looks great.
WOW!!!! THat is beautiful. Looks quite similar to my '88 Thumb NT4.
guess i've been hanging around at the effects forum for so long that i haven't seen this thread about the warwick owners. well here's mine, sorry its with my sadowsky. its a 4 yeard old streamer stage 1 5 strings. i will post some more pics next time. pls count me in!!!

You can count me in too... I'll get a pic soon, I have a 2004 LTD FNA Jazzman 5 string. I loved them when they came out in 2004, but didn't have the dough, and this past Feb 2008 I found a new old stock piece. What a find!

I thought this would be the best place to ask, what do you fellow Corvette owners recommend for an upgraded preamp? I have EMG pickups (great sound) but standard MEC Pre.. I am thinking AGUILAR OPB-3 with the 3 band 3 knob setup. Not sure whether I should keep it 2 band, any ideas? or any other pre's?
The OBP-3 is a great sounding preamp. You can't really go wrong with that one. I've got a 'Vette with an Audere preamp in it, and it sounds pretty good paired with the set of Nordstrand's that I put in. I think the Audere works with passive pickups only, so keep that in mind if your EMG's are active.

I was thinking of getting the 3 band setup, any difference to the 2 in terms of tone (other than mid adjustment)? I usually just keep all my knobs centred except for volume so I don't really NEED a 3 band as such because I do most of my adjustments from my amp/pedals. Any thoughts?

Hey guys, I was just wondering if my Thumb is active or passive. It has MEC pickups. Im pretty sure its active, which means both my basses are active. Just double checking.
All Warwicks have active preamps (except the passive Corvette Standard, which comes in both ways), but pickups can be active or passive.
On MEC pickups:
Gold logo = active.
Silver logo = passive.
I'm pretty sure all Thumbs have active pickups as standard.
I find the 3 band gives you more possibilities to shape your sound right from the source. Since you're generally leaving the EQ on the bass flat, it's not such a concern really. Which brings up this question: what are you looking for out of a new preamp (or, what don't you like about the MEC preamp right now)?
