THE ONE INFLUENCE?

Hard to say of course, but I can sum up my top 3 in one person: Pino Palladino. I would've said Jaco, Jamerson, and Entwistle, but Pinop does the fretless thing, the old R&B thing, and the rock thing MASTERFULLY.

Cliff Burton (Kill 'Em All video) made me buy my first bass at 17 yrs old. Now I realize all the motown, disco, and classic rock that my mom played during my youth, has influenced my playing as much as all my faves: Cliff, Flea, Tim Commerford, Duff, JPJ, Geddy, etc. Not to mention that I was a Michael Jackson FANATIC when I was a in elementary school & jr high (great bass in that stuff!!).

Bakithi is the man!

Man, if I had to pick one player it would either be Geddy Lee circa 1986-1991 or Stuart Hamm minus the tapping. I learned so much from Stu's slap and fingerstyle playing (and he can groove like no other), but I was never great at tapping!

I was about to blurt out Geddy's name, because he did indeed influence me a lot during my formative years, but now that I think about it, the one guy who made me want to play bass in the very beginning was Sting. I would see Police videos on MTV in the early '80s and I would think, "wow that guy singing is cool... what's his name, oh Sting? What's he playing? Oh a bass? Cool, I wanna be like that guy."

This isn't really realistic for me to answer, because i find that some players influence my picking technique more, while other influence my fretting technique. so I'd have to pick at least 2. and most of my fretting influence come from guitarists too :hiding:

Jack Bruce hands down!
A little story:
I actually aspired to be a guitar player but was thrown onto bass by accident when a friend from school needed a bass player for his band. Naturally I didnt really look up to any bass players at the time. But one day about 5 years ago I was in my room just casually listening to the radio. The station around here only knows how to play White Room, Crossroads, and the ocassional Sunshine, so Crossroads came on the radio for the umteenth time. When I walked by the speaker suddenly I stopped dead in my tracks. You know when you've heard a song a hundred times but never really LISTENED to it? Well while Clapton blazes on his guitar solo, Jack is in the background playing an incredible bass solo, and this is what I tuned into. My jaw dropped, it was like God rays were coming from the stero. And I remember the moment that I thought, "wow, I've got to look into this Jack Bruce guy!" I went to Borders and bought the Strange Brew DVD, ordered all the albums from BMG Music and googled just about everything except what he had for breakfast that morning. I'm sure some people think Im crazy when I tell this story, but I wouldnt be playing bass if it wont for him. From that day hes been my hero and inspiration ever since. :bassist:
