"The One"

I've had my 76 Ripper for over 30 years. It's my first bass and was the only one for most of that time. Still the first among several. Not at pretty as yours though.

Otto

I think yours is lovely. Got that sexier bevel and pointier look they started doing around late…what '75 or thereabouts? I also like the change in the way they positioned the pickup selector switch numbers so you could more easily read it while playing - and molded it into the pickguard.

Note: if you look you'll notice a dimple ding below and to the left of the bridge on mine. That is a memento of the night a crazy chick (because she certainly wasn't lady) got into an argument and hucked her shot glass at the head of the guy head she was with at The Rat (up in Boston) one night my band was playing there - and missed.

Memories!

I was just saying tonight at practice hire this one is getting cremated with me when the time comes. Funny how this bass has taken over in the short time I've owned it. Not letting it go ever.

Long time lurker, first time posting. I bought "the one" when I was fourteen by scraping together all of my money to buy a 2011 M.I.A Jazz bass sight unseen from a Long and Mcquade. My jazz bass got its nickname "3TC"-Third time's the charm-from the proceeding events. First, they brought in the completely wrong colour and wood combination. Then the replacement they ordered was stolen along with the entire shipping vehicle from a depot (Needless to say, both the staff and I were simultaneously confused and amazed.) . Eventually-two months later than expected-it arrived and four years later I honestly could not have asked for a better jazz bass.

Obligatory Picture:

I've spent a lot of money looking for the one, and still haven't found it. First I thought it was my first jazz, then there was a time when I thought my American Standard P bass with NP4 was my number 1, because I've done more gigs on it than any other bass combined. Then I put together a franken fender PJ with Jazz neck and I think that might be number 1 until something comes else comes along. :rollno: I envy those people who are completely happy with just one.

This is the one:

An OLP bass in BEAD with a Seymour Duncan basslines humbucker wired in parallel straight to the output.
It was originally bought to install some Darkstar pick ups but when I played it, I fell in love with the tone and the neck. It is the easiest neck I have ever played. Without any controls, it really is a 'plug & play' bass. I love it every time I play it. And since it only costed about 200$, it's not ever worth selling.

Still a newer bass (at least in my possession, only a few months), but I can't imagine I'll ever get rid of this guy right here. Between the beefy neck and how crazy aggressive the tone can get, I haven't found anything else since that can do as much.

It's funny with Rippers. You either immediately bond with and 'get' what they're about - or you never do. Everybody I ever met that bought one had that same experience. It seems it's not the sort of bass you can learn (or grow) to love, like a PBass or a Jazz. It's either love at first play - or never. Weird huh? The only other bass I'm familiar with that's sorta like that is a Ric.

Nice one you've got there. Play it well.

Maybe we should start a new club for owners of those Gibson "fat bottomed girls" as they've been called. (I prefer "Tall Blondes" except that sorta leaves out the ebony models- and that wouldn't be right.) The existing TB threads for them seem to have petered out.

I wonder how many people here own and play an L9-S Ripper, a Grabber, or a G3?
