I thought it may be fun to take a historical perspective that discusses pedals that were once in great favor, but have since fallen out of favor (for whatever reason) here on the forums. Sure, there are the venerable classics that will always be: The Russian Muffs, the Deep Impacts, etc...be let's look at some f thenot so classics that one were.

Two that come to mind for me are the Little Big Muffs and the Bass Pods. At once time these seem to have been all the rage, and now seems to have little mention. I think the Pods may be because 1) The tech is replaced rather quickly so there is always something better on the horizon in that genre and 2) Maybe the idea was a good one, but once under fire it seems to still be lacking when compared to other, more traditional stuff.

Any others?

Anything else? What my be some of the current hot pedals that may fall out of favor in the future and why do you think that?

Fulltone Bass Drive MOSFET, MXR Carbon Copy, and the Subdecay Quasar immediately come to mind. The Bass Drive fell because a slew of better bass ODs came out and the Carbon Copy was because virtually everyone else made copies specifically to compete with it, but I'm not so sure about the Quasars.

As for boom and fizz, I can see the Rusty Box and MXR Bass Comp being fad pedals that eventually disappear.

I had a few instant and short love affairs with pedals, so not going to be easy to single one out. The one that does stick to mind is the Bass Big Muff. Liked it instantly when it went on the board, then went through a phase where I tried hard to like it, then took it off the board, then sold it. Not a bad pedal, just didn't like it anymore. Another one ? DOD FX25. Fell out of favor when I got an FX25B. Boss BF-3 also, again not a bad pedal by any means, just don't have much use for it. Then the Cry Baby 105Q comes to mind. mostly because of less-than-adequate bypass and the fact that I don't like rock a wah when playing bass. The MXR BOD is another one... really like the color on that one, but not its tracking. But as I said, really hard to single one out...

Price seemed prohibitive for those peals I think. Quality stuff, but I favored my gray box Black Cat BOF over them, as I thought the tone was as good if not superior.

I'd say the VT Bass - the thing practically makes the front end of any so-so amp immaterial, and can offer a real leg-up to a great amp. It records great, too. I bought mine the month the thing came out and I still don't want to turn it off. There are lots of good preamping DIs, but there's really nothing that does what the VT does as well as the VT. I hope an effect that improves on the VT does get built, because it'd be pretty darn amazingly amazing. And, based on my great love of this box, I'm raring to buy a Leeds, too. There's customer satisfaction for ya.

Funny... I didn't think the Iron Ether Oxide, which covers B:Assmaster and then some, had fallen out of favor. I'd say the reason the direct clones of the B:Assmaster aren't as popular is because of the availability of a more versatile product. Normally when the Oxide pops up on the classifieds, it gets snapped up pretty quickly.

OLC Flipster (a great pedal), Blueberry (original version), as previously mentioned Polish Love (also a great pedal).

I don't think Muffs ever go out of fashion, they are stuch a staple of the pedal world.

What's the next big thing?

I didn't say that the oxide is out of favor. If anything, a pedal that is made by IE is highly sought after and sells quickly in the classifieds. I wouldn't call it a brassmaster clone per say, as it's 2 pedals in one that does many sounds.

IE, ss/bs, and a lot of the I <3 Fuzz dudes are "here to stay"-type pedals for as long as they are in business.

The BBBOD (mad professor version) flopped over here. It didn't hold true to the bjfe brand and it's been a loooooooooooooooooooong time since there's been one in the classifieds! This might be the longest it's been w/out one on there.

Holy crap yes. I remember when I first came here everyone was going gaga over these guys and then within months they sort of became old hat and I never understood why.

Definitely all bark, no bite. The hype around it was huge and everyone was clenching their credit cards on the edge of their seats waiting for release but when it came out, bam, nothing.

This is why I think the MXR Bass Comp won't have as much staying power - it was easily the most hyped pedal of the year but within weeks of being released Empress released their comp that does everything the MXR can do but better (except hard limiting).

Also, the Devi Ever Silver Rose seems to be another example of "huge hype and anticipation but no delivery," albeit for different, incredibly unfortunate and uncool reasons.

The Submarine was mentioned, but I wouldn't call it the pedal de jour though; as whenever, if ever, they do go up for sale, they are gone in hours, if not minutes. Rare pedals nowadays, and worth the hype. I dare say Oz made an underground classic there.

I never understood why they fell out of favor. During my medical disaster of yesteryear, I had to sell lots of my gear to pay for my surgical bills. I re-bought the Malekkos 6 times over!

Now that that's all over with, my current one isn't going anywhere!!
