The Pedulla Club!

My brother came out for the NAMN show this past weekend and I decided to hand off my '89 Buzz to him to ferry back to Providence and hand deliver to Michael and Co. for a refinish.

I get this shot in an email late saturday night. Apparently both luthiers made quite the impression on each other.

Thought I'd post another pic of my Pentabuzz, since I'm finally starting to get really comfortable with it.

I had Mike Lull install Circle Ks and do a set up on it, and it just did not feel or sound right, so I decided to go in another direction. I ordered up a set of light gauge Sadowsky black label flats and had my usual set up man do the installation and set up. Having spent a couple or three weeks playing it the Sadowskys are breaking in and the playing experience has been transformed for me.

The tone is smooooooooth, whether I'm playing up by the neck or honking down by the bridge, the tension, as usual, of the light gauge Sadowskys is sublime, and the B and E strings no longer sound crispy and metallic. They really sing now.

I was going through a lot of mental contortions about whether or not to sell this bass and look for something different, like a Rob Allen MB2 or do a ground-up Warmoth fretless Jazz build, but now my mind is settled. This bass is going nowhere! :smug:

My ThunderBolt 6, I struggle with the tone quite a bit. Looking for fat tone at the bottom and it just all bright to me. I've got the old 3-knob electronics with Soapbars and to me it's really hard to get a nice dark fat bottom end. Now, it does a great grindy Marcus tone with the Pedulla tapered nickels on it. They are low but when I try to get fat, I get a middy P bass tone and the strings are a little clangy. Action is very low so that should be expected some, but I can't EQ that out even close. Anyone have similar results with the old electronics? I have to bass EQ the heck out of my amp(RH450) and have even picked up a Source Audio Programmable EQ which I love. The top end of this bass is spectacular. I love it. Just looking for some fatness.

Yes indeed I have heard of a fretless thunderbass. Superb instrument. In fact there is one on ebay right now (no affiliation I promise).
Michael does all sort of things with de-fretting and coating if you wanted to go that route.
Just an FYI I have played a 6 string fretless thunderbass (ironically called the thunderbuzz). It was amazingly clear and articulate. Real gem just not a 6 string player or I would have snatched it in a heart beat.
