Hello, may I join the Pedulla Club as well with my Pedulla Series II? I am the first owner of that great bass. It has an absolute distinct growl, especially on the H string.

Just landed this cool Rapture. It's more green / blue (teal) than blue in person.

Anyway, just have the strings off to give her a thorough cleaning and just ordered an autoharp wrench which apparently works on Pedullas... Anyway, hoping to put her in regular, gigging rotation.

Just picked up a Raptor myself, love the neck.

Not sure I've posted them before, these Raptures are my 2 overall favorites in 37 years of playing. They are only basses I've played that sound equally great with any type of string (round, flat, light, heavy, un/tapered, steel, nickel) and with the 5 string especially there is literally no knob setting that sounds bad.

The blue J-2000-5 is one of the few wide (19mm) 5s I've played that is just as comfy as a 4, and since I got it my F-Bass BN5 has spent most of its time in its gig bag. The red RB-4 is 8.2#, and has IMO the best Jazz-profile neck ever. Super-sleek yet still substantial.

A funny story about getting it, the first time I came to the SF Bay Area to look for apartments in 2006 I drove by a Guitar Center. I was close to broke and already had the blue 5. Before going in I said to to myself, "The only purchase I will allow myself to make is if they have a used Rapture with soapbar or P-J pickups." What are the odds, right? And what did I see hanging there? I asked to play it. Phenomenal feel and sound, but some scratchiness in the pots. Between that and the fact that the paint was starting to peel in a few places around the bridge and neck plate, I got them to reduce the price by 1/3. The guy said "Ya know, we have a Pedulla case in back. Didn't come with this but we want to make space, you can have it." OK then, Travis! At that point, I think every GC in NorCal had a very stoned, helpful guy named Travis.

A couple shots of De-Oxit at home fixed the scratches, and the paint hasn't moved in 16 years. Almost every other solid-finish Rapture I've seen gets the same kind of rash.

Does any one know what brand pots did Mike used in the buzz basses?

I had to have one replaced a couple of years ago. The tech had to try several before finding one that sounded the same on my 1988 . I do not believe that the exact pot was still available and I suspect that later year models used a different pot as well

Yeah, I imagine they changed over the years, and may not be available any more. I'd settle for something close. Quality counts, I don't think CTS is going to do it. Seymore Duncan and Dunlop make good stuff, but as near as I can tell they don't have any long, split shaft pots.

How's the tone with the band?

i forgot to update the thread... i have since had a number of rehearsals with the new p/u. Simply put, the most notable change is what one would expect going from a humbucker to a single coil.... a much more open tone that I really like. Similar, if you will to taking a blanket off my cab... tons of open sounding notes and punchier at volume..

My Pentabuzz is a 1994 model and has been played with rounds as long as I've had it (five or six years now). I believe it has been played with rounds throughout all of it's life. There is some light cosmetic marking on some parts of the board but not much. I haven't noticed this change in all the time I've owned the bass and I'll continue using round as I please.

I've always said with fretless basses, 'just use the strings you want to get the tone you want'. Some guys says 'oh, but I'm scared of marking the board'. Who exactly are you keeping it pristine for? The guy who buys it off you and finally gets the potential out of the instrument? There is no point going to your grave saying 'I compromised on tone but man, that board looked pretty good.'.

You can't take 'em with you.

My only counterpoint would be that there's no longer anyone to service them if the board gets too worn to play. You're stuck trusting a third party. With a bass like a Pedulla that you buy for life and can't really replace, it's a valid concern. That said, I do use rounds on mine, but it bothers me a little that it might someday get to a point where it's irreparable.

Both basses had options for 17.5mm or 19mm string spacing. So from a playing perspective, there should be no difference between them.

To the best of my knowledge, all Pedullas had a common soft V profile on the neck.

I have a number of basses from Pete Skjold which have a similar and very comfortable neck profile that feels fairly close to my Pedullas. If you tell him you want a "Pedulla profile," he can probably nail it. Andrew Drake also builds a great neck and can do a custom profile. The same is true for Tom Clement.
