The Raconteurs - Salute Your Solution

The distortion on the bass line in the beginning of this song is amazing. The search function led me to find that the bassist uses an EHX English Muff'n.

What I want to know is if this tone can be achieved just using a Big Muff Pi, and what settings should I use?

The Muff'n actually has nothing at all in common, sound-wise, with any of the Big Muff versions. EHX just likes the word muff.

Listening to the song, though, it does sound like a tone I could get out of my Big Muff. Any ideas?

In the video, that completely sounds like a Big Muff to me. Maybe i'm out of my mind. =(

Listening to the vid, it does sound like a fuzz. I can get that tone with the Frantone Bassweet, a germanium Fuzz-Face variant. The Muff'n can be driven into fuzz by using high-gain tubes and cranking it to max, so maybe that's what he did.

It's a bit more grindy than a wall of doom big muff.

I can get that sound out of a messdrive hybrid plus in modern mode.

Sounds like a Russkie muff. They tend to sound a bit more grindy to me, and less wooly than their NYC counterparts.

i dont know man. i bet he put some 12ax7s in his muff'n to get that. i had a muff'n and with the 12ax7s i could pull it off.
