As long as I'm paying cash (which is still the vast majority of the time), I keep a few pennies on me. If my total purchases ring up as, say, $21.03, I like having 3 pennies handy so I don't get all that change back. I think we should keep using the pennies that are already in circulation for as long as cash is still accepted, and just don't make any more.
Once pennies are phased out, retailers will mostly likely round up, not down. It won't break anybody, but we will end up paying a little more per purchase.
I try to do that few penny thing too but more often than not I'm unprepared and walk away with a completely annoying .97c in my pocket that ends up in some pile
