Apparently the US Copyright Office isn’t buying that. At least not yet. I’d like to see a citation showing a company owned AI system is holding a US copyright at this point. If you can point me to one I be grateful. I spent most of my career in IT and my interest in AI goes back to the 70s when I was fortunate enough to meet Marvin Minsky. So this is a topic I’ve been closely following over the years.

FWIW, the absolute reach of any system extends only as far as its connection to the physical world. Systems of any kind are seldom allowed to run completely unmonitored. And a simple on/off switch will shut down the most advanced system, scifi movies to the contrary.

There's also the distinct possibility that consumers won't merely "not care" if music was created by a machine instead of a human, but actually *prefer* the AI creation because it's nifty that it was made by a gadget.

AI's gonna have to compete with all of the human-generated sh** music already out there.
Why is it the AI’s decision to make? Why would it be built that way? Who would ever want to build it that way?
Makes for the “enabling premise” in movies like Terminator, 2001, and Colossus: The Forbin Project. But in reality, systems aren’t designed or built that way. So while it makes for a good story, it completely denies reality in order to make the story happen. It’s like saying: “Lets pretend dragons are actually real!”

I haven't seen every post here in the thread yet but I have already checked out a Ai melodic death metal band that sounded pretty awesome it was at least comparable to Amon Amarth or Insomnium musically and until I was told it was a Ai project I had no clue that it wasn't a new band from Scandinavia. Things are developing at a crazy fast rate in that field.
When drum machines first came out they were "going to replace all the drummers". Yes, there were a few tunes where people used drum machines instead of a human drummer, but they were done mostly to give a different feel to at specific tune - touring bands still have drummers - there wasn't a mass firing of drummers (obvious joke here, fire away)
I suspect AI will be similar. Will we hear AI generated music as the background in local commercials? Probably. Will it replace all the live musicians? Probably not.
Term papers for college? Yeah, that's gonna be interesting. Professors may need to do oral exams if they want to find out if students have learned material that can't be tested by multiple choice.

I do *some* coding for my day job, and I have 2 AI/ChatGPT thoughts:
1.) a teammate brought me a chunk of ChatGPT generated code to do a task they needed. It didn't work. butI was able to bug fix it and get the tool the user wanted. Chat GPT is about as good as what a human can cut and paste from Stack Overflow. ChatGPT can't test or debug the code it generates. My job is not threatened in the short term at least.
2.) Our Legal depart recently circulated a notice to Not use Chat GPT or similar LLMs to generate code for our products, due to the intellectual property gray area. Can Chat GPT's owners sue us for IP infringement if we release code so generated in our products? That is the flip side of the legal concern.
People in general are conflating Super intelligent AGI concerns with the neato output of ChatGPTs and DALL-Es.

Since ChatGPT 4 has passed the Uniform Bar Exam with higher scores than 90% of all lawyers, it might be able to not only make its own creative works, but successfully defend itself in court as well.
