Happy Birthday, Chef!
Here you go: some pics of me playing the Swirl PJ in a strip club. Sorry there weren't any mirrors in the shots.
That was quite the eye-opening gig.
Also about the only gig where the audience basically completely ignored us. 
Here's a pic of my two!

That was quite the eye-opening gig.
My favorite "playing in a strip club" story involved us loading in, stepping over the nude woman writhing on the dance floor, with about 6 guys ranged around stage staring intently at her.

Settled on the Rev PJ, and Sadowsky RV5...was gonna take the BH5, and while I love it, I need one meanmutha out of the three. The DB ain't that, so....

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond control, it wasn't as good of a test drive as it could've been. White out snow squall on the way to the gig, so I got there later than planned. Plus, I have to set up and run the PA. So no chance to really tinker or AB with my 5L before hand. In fact, I just noticed on the pics, you can string thru the body if you wanted. I'm not sure if it was!...We've had a standing monthly gig there for 3 years, so I know the place well. It's a 100 year old former bank, so big square cinder block walls , and a 30 foot ceiling. Tiny stage, amp right next to amp, right next to amp...so it always sounds crummy in there...
On first pickup...It seems made really well. Very solid feeling. Fit and finish were remarkable. Seemed a tad lighter than my 5L, but I couldn't a/b so I won't swear to it. Neck was a little wider, and a little flatter than the 5L. Probably a little closer to the Houser neck. Action was really low. My Ashdown head has a VU meter to show the input gain. The pickups are HOT. I had to turn down the gain substantially. My one complaint on my 5Ls is the string to string balance. The B string pegs the VU, while the D and G barely move it. I've adjusted pickup height and bridge height, that helped a little, tried a compressor, but I always have to keep a mental note to lay back on the B. This bass was dead even across all strings. So I flipped the mute switch after setting the input, and it sounded really good. I've never liked the sound in this bar, but the bass sounded really good. Volume and tone on full, blend in the middle. Up and down all the strings, the balance was perfect. It really shined around the 7th fret, even on the D and G strings. The notes were really solid and full and cut through the jukebox and the bar chatter. Definitely not as bright as my 5L, and a little deeper. I had to boost the upper mids and turned down some of the bottom.
Next test, I slapped. Why? I don't know...it's what I do when I turn my amp on...I only slap in one song, and I'm not very good at it! Didn't like it at all. Very hollow sounding. That's when I noticed not only is the action too low for me, but the strings were really close to the pickups. We start playing, and I'm not liking it... just sounded kind of empty. I'm adjusting the blend knob, adjusting amp settings when I can....When we play, we play entire Pink Floyd albums as sets...it's up to me and the drummer to keep the flow between songs, so I fiddled when I could, which isn't often. Midway thru the first set, I noticed when I played softer, it sounded much, much better. When I dug in, bleh. So I'm thinking it's gotta be the pickup height. Last song of the first set, my slap song. No pun intended, or maybe, sounded like someone slapping a fish up against the wall.
Ken asks me at break time what I thought, and I told him. He said they were already aware of that. The production models neck slots won't be cut as deep. The bridge saddles on mine were resting right on the bridge, as low as they could go, because the fretboard is so close to the body.
I was going to switch for the second set, but a bass player in the audience came up to me and asked about the bass. He said it sounded great out there. Plus several other people said we sounded better than usual, so I figured I play out the night with it.
Second set, same sentiments. When I layed back, it sounded great. When I dug in, it lost something. Especially between the nut and the 5th fret on the lower strings. I also noticed my fingers started turning black. I asked Ken what strings were on it. He said no idea, whatever they had lying around in the factory. So I would guess some cheap nickles judging by my fingers.
I would love to put a good set of strings on, raise the action, lower the pickups possibly too, before I could really put a verdict out. I love the string to string balance on it.
