I'm not a flats guy myself,but I have compromised with pressure-wounds on the 'fish..The crisp,sparkly highs I use rounds for are too pronounced and the flats give great thump and snap,but the tones still sound a bit muted. The pressure-wounds really are a nice blend of the two..thumpy,punchy,crisp and clear all at the same time.

I'm a big fan of the chromes on most of my 'fish but did a recent tour with LaBella's on my PJ. I needed a very specific old school R & B sound for the combo, almost like an upright, and only the LaBella's had the required thump coupled with a bright attack.

I recently strung my Rumblefish with a set of Ernie Ball Cobalts. WOW. This bass was already a snarling beast, but the Cobalts take it to another level. If you're into rounds, I recommend you try 'em.
I had Chromes on a PJ and a 5L and both basses loved them, the PJ in particular.

The EB website show 5-6 variants of Cobalts, and each one has the same weak-sauce copy that tells you nothing at all about them.

It's kinda like someone took a set of Slinkys and turned everything up. I'd say the sound and feel are halfway between nickel rounds and steel rounds. I'm not great at describing these things, but take everything that's great about a 'Fish with rounds, and Cobalts make it better. I love 'em.

what were you using before?
I like the DA XL170 pretty well....

The Cobalts seem a bit pricey in comparison, but, if they're good, they're good...

I used Hybrid Slinkys on that bass for a long time, and D'Addarios before that, same set you mentioned. If you like those, Cobalts are worth a try.

I have a BH5 with the dark mahogany wood-style finish on the body with a black pickguard. I've been thinking about getting a custom guard done, so I'm fishing for suggestions. I am contemplating something of a lighter color or fin, b/c I am thinking contrast might be cool - any suggestions?

Now I have to find a reliable company that does custom guards. In the past I've had some very mixed experiences with some of them. Plus, I am going to want to send a tracing, don't want to send I'm my 'fish guard and risk losing it.

Anyone have a good experience with a company that makes pg's?
