I'm obsessing about blues and old school R&R tones and thinking about acquiring a p-bass. I've never owned one. Three plausible options -
1) buy a Fender pbass (too boring?)
2) build a pbass clone (fun, but zero resale potentail)
3) buy a Revenrend P/J! (:bassist:)

The cost is about the same for each, but it would nice to have another fish in the pond to keep my XL company. I'm assuming the tone would be comparable to option 1 and 2.

If anyone is thinking about selling their P/J, please PM me. I prefer a maple neck, but condition and price are most important.

I recently landed a fairly rare finish... though with such low numbers of USA era Basses, just about any finish is rare.

Yeah, not much activity around here lately.
I just slapped a fresh set of Ernie Ball Cobalts on my 'Fish. Excellent strings and a good match for the bass. Very aggressive sound.
Also, I got hipped to a product called Gorgomyte, which you should check out if you haven't. Fretboard cleaner/conditioner plus fret grime remover, all in a handy cloth. You cut small pieces off, about an inch or two, for each job. The frets on my 14-year-old 'Fish look almost new and the board is radiant. I think GHS sells its own version, and it's also marketed under the name 'Miracle Cloth.'

I've seen the youtube demo.
I think there are various versions of this, including EB/MM.

I didn't gig the PJ tonight cause I know it's a dead killer, and I have a 51 reissue P I been thinking about axing....

So I finally decided to get off my tosh and give the old 'fish a once-over.

It has been my sole workhorse bass since I got it till about a year ago when I bought my 2nd bass, an Ibanez SR600. The 'fish has never been really given a thorough working over.

got most of the yellowing off. note that this is before working on the neck joint. also, i didn't scrub the beveled edges of the sides, so you can still see yellowing there.

+1, he speaks the truth. I used the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on my "whitewalls" and it came up nice and bright without the abrasion and mess of steel wool.

Even the magic eraser is slightly abrasive and will take a gloss finish down to semi-gloss. Nice looking Lava Swirl.
