Kind of reverend related, kind of not but my friend just has a railhammer anvil in his guitar to replace a Seymour Duncan invader. It really solves all the problems we had with it. The clean and distorted tones were both way better and everything just sounded more...together for lack of a better phrase. The lows were way tighter but the highs stayed solid. I really wish there was a bass version now!
Love my Purple Burst Reverend Triad to death. To death. I shall never part with it.
That being said, I recently purchased a Sterling MM SUB StingRay and immediately fell in love with the tone. It's the tone I have been lusting over all these years. I mean, I always knew the MM sound was for me, I just never had the opportunity to play one (even a Sterling).
So my question is this:
Owners (or experienced users) of both a StingRay and a Mercalli -- How close is soloing the bridge PU going to get me to that tone I want? Am I playing a fools game? Should I just go ahead and get a MM? I know the fit and feel won't compare to a Reverend; but it's the tone I'm chasing this time.
(unfortunately there are none to try within several hundred miles of me)

It doesn’t sound like a stingray partly due to the positioning and partly due to the lack of a preamp. The bridge pickup on the mercalli is located closer to the bridge than a regular stingray pickup. The Raymond might have the pickup in the right location.
Thanks for the info! I didn't realize the Raymond and Mercalli had different pickup locations. I actually like the blue Raymond, maybe I'll look for one -- I thought the model was discontinued. I can always add a pre-amp, If the tone is right!
It’s still on the website so I don’t think it’s been discontinued. My thundergun is set up like the mercalli and the bridge pickup is right by the bridge. The Raymond is closer to the neck for sure.
Stingray/Mercalli man here...the Mercalli rear H doesnt have the top end aggression of the ray. But it does hit pretty hard down low and in the mids when solo'd - like a ray
I have a Thundergun and a Stingray....IMO the rear pickup on the T-gun sounds closer to the rear pickup on a Jazz...or somewhere inbetween a MM and Jazz pickup. The Tgun is still new and my first Reverend...im still in the "bonding" phase, havent found the right strings yet, etc.
Still bonding with mine... since Dec! I have not changed anything on it, but have only played it with the band once. My main rig is at my singer's house and as a result, I really only know how the TG sounds at home, through headphones, or my backup rig.
In the house/headphones, though, I really really love how it sounds. We're gonna dust off the tunes on Thursday and I hope to be able to really get some feels for it then.
It defiantly has a deeper low/low mids tone with an aggressive grind edge when you dig it. I think it could benefit from slight compression. It doesn’t have the snap or upper mids of a Fender/bolt on, but has its own voice for sure. As an example, I put Nickel Super Brights on it, these strings out of the box, on a Fender are noticeably way bright and take time to settle in.....on the TGun, they were different, not nearly as bright sounding. So the tgun is naturally a bit darker/thicker that a standard P or MM.
It definitely has its place, and it’s own thing going on. It won’t replace a good P or Stingray, but is a nice change. I’ve recently had good results lowering the pickups, seems sensitive to pickup height. It’s a lot less rattley and a bit rounder.
Much rounder. I have had great success with soloing the rear H with rounds. Raises the punch, lowers the amount of pillow. But my amp setup is pretty low heavy, so a solo'd rear H sounds great.
My Mercalli 5 output is at least as hot as my stingray 5.
Went down to Reverend Co. in Toledo Ohio yesterday and took the 25 cent tour. Spent time in the wear house looking at different guitars and basses, played a Mercalli 5 (green), great guys, great company, I'm sold! They don't sell direct but they hooked me up with a dealer, got a good deal and their setting the bass up today. Should have it tonight and taking to a gig on Satuday. Update coming soon... (already thinking about flats.)

I’ll most likely be getting a triad in the coming months. Been looking for something in the jazz bass ish realm so this should do nicely. Though I will be modding it so it can do neck and bridge pickups and all 3 together.

The original design was just 3 volume knobs, and a tone. I never heard it, but the people that make the decisions said it sounded weird with all 3 on
And it very well may. But I’ve always been the guy that if there’s options I’d like to have access to them even if I use it rarely.

Totally agree. I told them that the only thing it needed was a kill switch, so you could mute it without messing with volume knobs
