Quick question. Montezuma brown 4003FL. How common are these? Also, a guy is looking to make a trade me an 84 4003S for a something and some cash. I don't have any experience with S models or Ricks of that age. How do you think it compares feel, sound, quality etc with my 07 4003 (closest thing I have)? Opinions? don't want to pull the trigger for nothing, especially if that 4003FL is still around when sell the other bass.

Hey, sanity check from fellow Rick folks. Guy tells me there were no 4003S models in 84, but this bass he has is unbound and has dot inlays in the fretboard and the split pickguard. Ran the SN myself and it was made november 84. From that description, sound like a 4003S? I want it, but I mentioned what my pricing deal and he got kinda cold. Who's right? This is coming from a guy who didn't know the name of the finish (autumn burst or seirra burst he calls it. I say aged Fireglo, but what do I know) so I think I'm right.

Nov 84 is a 4003S and it should have a 2 piece pickguard. if it is more brown, it is either autumnglo or walnut; if it is reddish, then it is fireglo. post a picture if you have one and we can tell you...1984 did in fact have 4003S basses just like every other year up to a certain point...

Yeah, I thought as much. Oviously only a mono jackwould have been a give away but he didn't include pics. Its definelty fireglo, its just a bit aged, but I wouldn't call it brrown enough in the picsto be autumnglo. The guy ended up wanting 1700 or so, and the condition didn't warrant it. Basically he ticked me off. Anywho, can I join the club? Crummy pic, lousy lighting and it was right before she got a bath.

Well I remember on the Ric newsgroup that someone mentioned that they still hadn't received their Lemmy signature model bass, that was at least 6 years ago, now that it's been discontinued I wonder if he ever received it :-)

Since they bought another CNC machine, raised their prices (maybe in order to hire additional employees) and cut a number of models from their line, I was guessing that one of their new corporate objectives might be increased time to market.

New 4003's have full width inlays, a nice slim neck, and Walnut wings.

Appreciate the input. The guy was too much of a jerk about money and what I was trading was worth more than his 4003S. Had it been pristine, maybe I'da done it, but it wasn't.
Now Im trading for a Sadowsky. But this has got me thinking Ill be looking for a 4003s sometime soon.

That is spelled e-c-o-n-o-m-y...people are taking what they have not used for a while and liquidating to help their finances

I've had a wish list of gear that I've been holding off on buying from about 5 years. Now I'm buying stuff at killer prices. My latest acquisition is an Ampeg 4x10.

I was speaking with Mike Parks from the Rick Connection the other day about this same subject, right now is a good time to be buying used gear. Anyone want to sell a Rick 4006 for about $2000? :-)

That's one of the benefits of working in a really boring, but recession proof industry.
