The Rickenbacker Club Part Eight

I would guess because if you shelled out the cash for a Ric, you want the Ric sound. There's what, a few thousand different models with p/j/buckers? What about hi-gains? Only Ric.
That and maybe the thinner body = less people willing to try and route out extra?

Fanboys are imbeciles, enda story.

Suspension of analysis, intellect and critical faculties is never healthy, especially when you're dropping real money on something.

I've learned a lot more from this thread than I have from most of the other "club" nonsense, and I've been seeing gripes about Rickenbacker QC from shocked buyers on TB for a long time. It's not just this this thread.

The main thing I've learned is that, even more than most other US builders (which is saying a great deal), RIC needs to pull up its socks and get serious about the quality of their product and customer service, which are frequently atrocious.

I've also learned that if I'm going to buy a Rickenbacker (a move which I am seriously reconsidering), I need to be even more careful in scrutinizing the instrument and the price than I usually am.

And this just in...a local meatstick is trying to unload a used 2011 JetGlo on CL for $1600. :rollno:
Balance that opinion with this.

Someone who is happy with something like perhaps their Ric will post about it once. Someone who had an issue will post multiple times with updates, etc.

I have 2 Rics. Both 4003's. one is a 2001 JetGlo and the other a 2011 MapleGlo. Both are excellent instruments and I have no issues at all with either.

The guys without the problems just have nothing to complain about so we don't chime in all the time.

OK so no0b question.

how come you almost never see modded rics? like P/J pick ups slammed in there? or a Gibson mudbucker?

It happens, but not as often as with other basses. Part of the uniqueness of a Rickenbacker is the single coil pickups they put into the 4001/3's. Since most want the authentic Rickenbacker tone, they leave the stock pickups in.

Another reason is that modifying a Rickenbacker (especially routing out holes for new pickups) tends to drop the resale value immensely.

Oooh, careful! ;) Out of the frying pan into another frying pan!

Seriously, though, I think it's mainly because of how much they cost. People don't usually mod their $1500 basses of any make, if you think about it. The heavy modding (i.e. routing for different pickups) is usually done on Squiers, MIMs, SXs, etc.

When you do see MIA Fenders being modded, its usually a this-neck-with-that-body kind of a thing, which is much easier to do when you have a bolt-on neck, obviously.

GG7....... I'm just tired of hearing all the whining. If you have complaints start a new thread as other's have said. I come to this owners club looking for useful information since I am a new Ric Bass owner. I appreciate you taking pictures of your chipping finish, but exactly how does that affect my Ric bass enjoyment? Take complaints to the BBB in your area. Write poison letters to Rickenbacker and Musicians Friend. Call Rickenbacker. Go to small claims court. Sue Rickenbacker...... just give it a rest with the Ric bashing. There is not anyone here who can help you with your Ric problems. Everyone can offer you sympathy but that's the extent of it. I'm sure everyone agrees you have had bad luck, but even sympathy gets thin after a while.

I'm an old retired guy and my BS meter is easily maxed out. There. I have vented and feel better. Think I'll go have a glass of iced tea.

...complaining about their photographic evidence of a serious problem...

I have not been a part of this "discussion" up till now but this comment made me wet my pants! :D

I have been a serious photographer for many decades now and my opinion is that photographic evidence lost credibility with the advent of digital imaging. Actually, it occurred way before that; Mathew Brady did a lot of evidence tampering when he created his photographic body of work during the Civil War!

I am not saying you did any evidence tampering, I am only commenting on the use of that term as it relates to photography (anymore).

You're ok with this then? A factory sealed 2011 4003 sold by an authorized Rickenbacker dealer. One of THREE I received all with the same exact finish cracking problem. I should just be grateful I own such an awesome guitar brand, is that it? The fact the finish is falling off the body doesn't matter as long as it plays great? Thats your motto?

WOW! :rollno:

This is why I don't debate with blind fanboys. A bigger waste of time you'll never find.

First of all I'm not a Fanboy. i'm a new owner interested in the new bass. Secondly I have no mottos. Thirdly, what is to you what I think? You have made your point over and over and over and ...........

Seems that our overall issues is a flood of posts that are out of line with the general theme of this thread/club.

@GG7, we don't deny you had problems with one specific model/finish of bass, all from the same online retailer and all likely from one or maybe two limited production runs. A rotten run of luck for you for sure. But your follow-up with Ric has worked and you have been offered repairs. The story is over. Ric has responded in an appropriate manner. Nothing more to say. They have taken ownership of the problem. So your ongoing assertion that this is a "major problem" is really kind of inflammatory to those many members here who don't have the same problem. So let it die, stop asserting that Ric has a major problem and start saying that Ric has offered to come through for you as they should and when Ric refinishes your Bass and presuming it's great send us a pic. Intended or not the discussion has derailed the thread.

I'm a proud and satisfied Ric owner. I am not a fanboy. Every company in the world looks for ways to do something better than they did before. Sometimes for a better product, sometimes for a better cost, sometimes for both. They usually test new materials or processes or procedures. Sometimes testing looks good but the real life results don't deliver. It has happened to the company I own (not music related btw) and as soon as we identified an issue we took steps to rectify. End of story. We screwed up and we fixed it.

Let it be so for your 4003 also GG7.

I'm really enjoying my new 4003. I didn't care for the molded case so I bought a vintage style silver tolex with blue interior case. I had a Ric 370/12 with that style vintage case when I was playing guitar. My assessment of my new Ric is it will take a little getting use to. I love the weight and feel of the neck, but the tone is so much different from my Fender, Gibson and G&L basses that I'm just not quite there yet on getting it dialed in. It is fun to play. It has enough resonance to noodle with it unamplified. That tells me something about the wood and quality of the build. The FG finish really looks good and has garnered compliments from several of my peers. I haven't been brave enough to gig with it yet because of not quite getting the tone where I want it. I always wanted a Ric bass after first seeing and hearing them in the 1960's. It was on my bucket list before I kick off. That's my report on my new 4003 for now. Updates to follow.

Just because I love my Ric does not make me a fan boy. Just because I love my Sting Rays does not make me a fan boy. Yes some have had quality issues but most have not. And you will get that, Rics are expensive to me but price is a relative thing,,,they are not expensive when compared to Sadowsky, Lakland. Roscoe and many others and I would think that many more Rics are sold than those brands. I think overall it is a well built quality instrument that some will like and some will not. Ps I played a American made bass 62 reissue today that was going for over $200 more than a new Ric....it was ok but no where near the quality of workmanship or sound or feel of my new Ric. And I am not bashing Fender-just my opinion.
