Anyone know where I can get the Ric-o-sound kit? I'm in nj but I know online somewhere is best.
About checkerboard binding: There's a music shop in my area that has an old beat up JetGlo 4001 hanging on the wall with checkerboard binding and a toaster on the neck. The bridge pickup is not a horseshoe, it looks a little crooked, and the cover is missing. The asking price is pretty steep for such a hard-lived instrument IMO, but man, the mojo is HUGE. I can totally see the appeal of the CB binding with the JetGlo color scheme. If the price was lower and if I had the time and room for it, I would give it a good home and get her fixed up to proper gigging condition and rock the stuffing out of it. I have no idea what condition the neck is in, though; it was very high up on the wall and I didn't dare try to put my filthy crab claws on it.
The horseshoe pup was retired approx 1968, checkered binding 1973? The toaster on regular bass'es was retired around that time as well
The kits have been out of production for years. There are knock-offs (and sometimes, originals) available on the Bay, but the easiest solution is just to use a stereo cable - stereo plug on one end, dual mono plugs on the other.
EDIT: Here is one on the 'Bay (no affiliation with the seller), but I sure wouldn't pay that price for one...

WOW! I can't believe what people are charging for those Rick O Sound boxes on eBay! You can build one for about 20 bucks worth of parts and 30 minutes of assembly time.
But I agree with Superdick2112 that the most practical and cost effective solution is to use a TRS male to two female 1/4 phono "Y" cord or a pre-made cable like he linked to. RadioShack may even sell the same thing in a simple black plastic jack box that would have the TRS female on one end and two 1/4 mono female jacks on the other. Then just plug in your own cords.

I just picked up a couple of those Joyo pedals today for my guitar. They go for 40 bucks each and come with a battery included. Reviews are good and the price for their nice selection of effects is very reasonable in my opinion.

Right now, the only stock colors for RIC are Mapleglo, Fireglo, Jetglo, Midnight Blue, and Ruby.
Are you thinking of Montezuma Brown? That was a color of the year for two years, actually, 2003 and 2004. Production to fulfill orders from those two calendar years continued until 2006. There has recently been a special order of a slightly different brown burst for a retailer in the U.K., but I don't think they called the color "Aztec Brown."

Apparently that's exactly what I'm thinking about.
Some smarty cleverly abbreviated that to "Aztec" in some post I Googled last night when I was searching (apparently unsuccessfully) for the CotY for 2013, and there was a mention of some "new" ones, which were apparently just NOS. In the absence of any other info on this, I became confused, being no expert on Rickenbackers.

There isn't one. . . the program was discontinued to get rid of the backlog. But they have been doing a lot of limited runs and one-offs for the past few years; sometimes they are sold on Ebay.

I'm just going to be on the lookout for the best deal I can on a MapleGlo and call it done. Less things to screw up with a natural finish. I'd consider a FireGlo, but they're strangely inconsistent, some looking really nice and others looking like they were faded with a rattle can with the result they look for all the world like a pus-filled boil.

I was seriously considering picking up a second 4003 in FireGlo, but the last day I have started having second thoughts. I've been hunting around the web for photos of recent production models, and it appears that the rock maple that RIC is using for 4003 production these days really lacks any personality most of the time.
Compare some of these current production examples to Sepp's beautiful vintage FireGlo 4001 with that nice flame maple grain pattern.
I've personally always had a problem with any type of Sunburst finish being applied to a blank and lifeless slab of wood. It just reminds me of those cheap 15 dollar electric guitars they use to sell at Thrifty Drug store when I was a kid back in the 60s.
Even when I was browsing through Wildwood's selection of 360/12 guitars, out of the four guitars they had in stock, only the one I ultimately purchased had any true personality in the wood. The other three had very tight and unremarkable grain patterns. About the same grain pattern as your typical 2x4. A burst finish on a boring piece of wood is going to end up looking boring too. Even if the sprayer does a fantastic fade job, with no unique grain patterns to play off of, it is going to look more like plastic than wood.
My two cents based on what I have seen so far in recent 4003 FireGlo examples.

I bought my 4003 from a local store, they had 5. Their Maple glo had a finger print of wood stain under the finish coating on the back of the body.

I got my 360 guitar from Willcutt's in Kentucky. They have a large stock of everything Rick, in addition to high-res, professional photos, so you can get a very good idea of what the grain pattern looks like. They are not the cheapest, but it was worth it to me.
