The Rickenbacker Club Part Nine

May or may not be a refin, but nonetheless, that's a STUNNING bass!:bassist:

Thank you very much.
Certainly a valid statement. What would be the best way to prove that any Rickenbacker isn't a refinish? I took a control cavity picture when I got it. Big "FG" in there. Hope that helps. Is there anything else I should be looking for?

I think the suspicion of it being a refin is because of the black binding, but I think it is original. Fireglo comes standard with white binding, but from roughly 1985 to 2002, RIC offered an option of "reverse trim" on its instruments (for an extra fee). So, Fireglo with black binding/trim/hardware has been possible/available, but until now, has not been seen by this author. Wonderful!

Other interesting "reverse trim" combos I've seen out there are White with white/chrome trim, Ruby with black, Red with white/chrome, Silver with white/chrome, Jetglo with black, and Desert Gold with black.

Although I've never seen the following combinations, there may be some extant: Sea Green with black (eww!), Turquoise with black, or Blue Boy with black.

Interestingly, Mapleglo came standard with black trim (binding, plastic, hardware) from 1986-'92!

That is really just Stunning. Hats off to you for owning that. Still love my Maple-Glo but man. I'm looking for one like this:hyper:
Thank you, and the others for the great Ric compliments. That's a win for my never ending G.A.S.
I am a big fan of all the black trim or no trim Rickenbacker basses. Such great examples in this thread.

I didn't mind the refinish question anyway. I certainly would question it since none have been seen and posted. Thank you and the others for helping me identify that it's not a refinish.
I'm glad I was able to help you cross off a black binding Rickenbacker bass you haven't seen yet. Looks like you have 3 left to find.

I find it very interesting how the black pickguard kept the finish underneath it it from darkening, cool.

Or is there something else going on in that photo?

Nothing else going on. You nailed it. Pickguard was probably never even removed. I agree that it is cool that the exposed finish got a little darker than the covered finish.

Saw Heart and Jon Bonham in Toronto last night. While it was mostly a "Fender bass" night the Heart bass player did pull out a gorgeous FireGlo for 2 songs in the middle of the Heart set. We weren't close enough to get a fix on specifics but it sure looked (and sounded) nice!

Such a cool book. I have it at work so I can always read through it again.

Question for Paul Boyer: Page 122 shows your collection of COY Rickenbackers. What is the story with the custom pickguard on the Montezuma Brown that says "Paul Boyer Signature Editon" ?

Got mine today a lot of cool pics a bunch of stuff I have never seen before. View attachment 350681

That's something you can have done with Pickguardian. You can have your signature printed on the back of a clear, back-painted pickguard to fit your Rick:

I also had the truss-rod cover painted the same color by Tony there. Shortly after that photo was taken, I allowed the bass to fall over flat on its face (DOH!) and the force against the control knobs was transferred to the pickguard which cracked in a few places. I put the original white pickguard back on (and swapped out the gold-painted TRC) to return the trim to standard.
