The Rickenbacker Club Part Nine

I got to plug in the Ric last night for the first time. It has an interesting and different sound. It's almost like a very slow Leslie lives in there somewhere. I don't know if it is a quirk of this specific bass or something else, but I like it. The mono jack is toast, but I have a soldering iron and I'm not afraid to use it. I might just monkey with it a little this evening and see if it needs a new jack or if I can fix it somehow. Ric meets hillbilly.

The neck on this one is narrow, but it isn't flat like the new ones, so I like it. It is shallower than my ideal, but the shape is very good, and the bass hangs well. I was surprised at how obvious the scale length difference was to my hands. It is only 1/2" or so, but it is noticeable. I'm not a complete convert to Ric-ness but might not be a complete Ric agnostic any more, either. The sound is fantastic with new TI flats. It almost sounds fretless at times, and it has an unusual resonance that I don't understand at all yet. Take away those unique aspects of the sound and it sounds more like a Jazz than a P, but not quite that, either. Pretty great.

It might just be the switch.
Sometimes the contacts get bent a little and don't quite work, so you may be able to re-bend them back.
It's worth a try.

It's the jack. I pulled off the plate and bent it back. Now it works. That's quite a jack Rickenbacker puts in there. It sure isn't the usual 39 cent part. I didn't even try to figure out the stereo jack, since the mono jack has far more parts and pieces than any jack I have ever seen before.

Yup, it's a switching jack so that when the mono jack is in use, the ROS (stereo) jack is inactive.
Some folks replace the jacks with two standard mono jacks, each run to one pup.

ROS is interesting, but I haven't yet found enough difference tonally to make it worthwhile to gig two sets of amps and cabs.

It's kind of a vintage look, and they don't use it on every bass. Some like it. I don't, but I'm not everyone. I prefer solid white or back-painted clear acrylic.
