2) the strap buttons are white/cream plastic. The bottom one was actually broken when he gave it to me. I'll put strap locks on it while I borrow it and may try and find cream replacements if he wants it back that way. Were they common?

I'll post a closeup of the intact strap button and the broken one. The screws holding them in place are partly stripped so they have been off at least once......

Those are not Rick strap buttons, as noted above.

Rick strap buttons are metal and screw directly into the body, no typical wood screws on a Rick, even for the straplock buttons.

Is it just me, or does it look like Ric modified the 4003 body shape again?

In the SnoGlo pic, it looks like they went back to the '90s style body with the wider upper horn.

In the SnoGlo pic, it looks like they went back to the '90s style body with the wider upper horn, as well as the "hook" on the headstock.

That's an illusion caused by the angle of the pic, which is showing the inner side of the cutaway.

Scottkartch......I had a '78 4001 in fireglo, and it had the same shading as yours, so that's the way the color looked around that time. What was the production date of that one? The serial number can be decoded on Rickenbacker's corporate website.

I'll look it up tomorrow. I thought it just said 1978. Thanks.

And now I won't worry about putting in Schaller strap locks. Thanks guys.

Nice score on the SnoGlo. One of my favorite 4001 players is Jon Camp from Renaissance, so I would swap out the truss rod cover and guard for black ones.

I just saw a picture of Chris Brubeck's fretless Rickebacker bass with a Jazz pickup in the bridge position. I wonder how he mounted it there? Don't they use wood screws instead of threaded bolts?

Great price for a 4003S, IMHO. No affiliation. The '88 basses are said to be really good too.

4003S is borderline collectible, so it's probably worth a few hundred more, to some people anyway.

The current headstock shape is a slightly shorter version of the 60s shape, which I personally prefer. The current body shape is also the 60s shape with slimmer horns. Also, since new 4003s can be had in the $1600 range, I can't see paying $1700 for one that's 12 years old.

Perhaps not but i feel an offer of $1000 was rather an insult.
