They did do many signature models, Suzanna Hoffs model, Roger McGuinn model, and of course the ones mentioned. But as of lately with their backlog, they no longer can manage anything like that. Perhaps in the future they will do more.

Not money, no, but Macca's bass was a gift from them. Lemmy's old basses weren't, but his limited edition model was, same with Squire's I bet.

Thats what I was thinking and I knew Macca got his ric free , I read the story on that and since his name isnt stuck on the bass i could see why he doesnt get money , but chris squier and Lemmy's were obviously signature instruments, I guess if they dont get money or a bass out of it there just doing it for publicity?
Recently 'rediscovered' my '83 4001 after neglecting her for about 12 years.
She is my first real bass (I learned on and played my first few shows with a Hondo FAME II bass) and when I bought her used in 1990, 2 of the 4 wavy grover tuners were busted. I replaced them with generic Gotoh-like tuners and recently, thanks to CapnJim here I was able to bring her back to stock (for a very reasonable price too!) and I'm giving her another chance in my current band.
Took awhile to find the right strap position to dig in and not kill my arm on the binding but after about an hour into our last practice I had settled in pretty well.

Very nice, Bombjack. Sure it is an '83? That would make it one of the last 4001's. Do you know how to date the serial numbers? An '83 would have the date code (two letters) at the "top" of the jackplate starting with "W" and the second letter would correspond to the month (A=January, B=February, etc.) RIC "stopped" making 4001's in 1980s, but those in inventory and sold later on would have later date serials. Tell me what your date letters are. Most likely it's earlier than '83.
Hi Paul - thanks..and yes, I've looked up the code on the Rick website...it's WB2XX = February 1983.
I've read that about the 4001's - here and on the Rick forums about phasing out the 4001's and phasing in the 4003...and the Wavy vs Flat Grovers installs. Lucky me got the Wavy ones...they look great but really are poorly designed. Thankfully this "new" set seems pretty stable.

Wow, that's excellent. Yeah, the flat-key Grovers were found more on the early '70s basses, but by the mid-'70s, the wavy keys were predominant. Keep that one; an end of an era!
My dear wife got this Ric 4003FG for me back on Valentine's Day, 2012. Just now getting to point of posting pics.
It was (is?) my dream bass and is currently my only bass at the moment. I've received quite a number of compliments about it.
It makes me want to be a better player, and I feel like it almost calls out to me to come practice every time I walk by it. I invariably succumb.

Picked this guy up in the classifieds a couple of weeks ago. Had to pull the bridge pickup and send it out to be rewound, but I did get to play it a few times with the neck pickup and it is awesome! This is my first Ric, other than the 77 Ibanez copy I owned for a short time. Waiting on the pickup to come back is killing me

Nordstrand! I was talking about it in a thread here and he popped in and told me to send it to them. I figured why screw around when I can make sure it's done right the first time.
Beautiful! No comparison, imo, re the Ric copies to real Rics.
I had a Greco, beautiful bass, but didn't do anything for me. Also a '70's Ibanez Ric copy-long ago- again, nice bass but nothing special.
My '97 Cheyenne just does "it".
