Yup, bubgina, which, in fairness is a kind of rosewood.

And yea, Im seeing (looking at other rics) that they dont seem to too common. When I first saw this Ric and that PG I was thinking it was repair job on the PG gone bad wrong... (Im still pretty Ric stupid but do know more now about them then I did a few months ago at least and still learning) Then the seller told me that was factory (split cause its Trod adjustments are at the heel not the headstock) and I was like oooohhhh. I was also told the Bridge is a 7 screw not 5. I was told thats rather rare? Im about to get in and replace the palm mute on it so I will find that out.

I guess call it beginners luck I got one that has some uncommon stuff on it?

What you have is an early 4003. It has the old style truss rods and they are indeed adjusted at the body end. What year is it? IIRC this style 4003 was made from 1980 (81?) to about 1984-5.

May I ask what tipped you off? Its one of the most accurate copies I've ever seen, and I'm not a Ric guru, so I'd like to know

Fretboard, inlays, color of the skunk stripe, maple.

You can tell if you see it side by side. Most Rosewood is brown. Rick fretboards look kind of orange/brown.

Having said that, I didn't register that it was a copy - so it's a pretty good one.

The shading of the burst looks a little peculiar and the board looks dark. But it does look pretty darn nice that's for sure!!

I wonder how the headstock looks in comparision?

Headstock is pretty spot on. However, the tuners aren't a copy. They're a more modern Schaller shape. And it has a truss rod reading "El Degas"

well currently both the 4001c64 and 4001c64s have the dots as opposed to inlays.

The 4004 series also uses dots as opposed to inlays

The 4004's are fantastic. No binding, dots, 3 way switch, single vol single tone. And, talk about great bass tone. The Cheyenne has a Walnut center, between maple top and back, maple neck, 2 HB-1 humbucking Ric pups, and deep dark, yet still "Ric-ish" top end. I highly recomend anyone to seek one out and try it.

The 4004's are fantastic. No binding, dots, 3 way switch, single vol single tone. And, talk about great bass tone. The Cheyenne has a Walnut center, between maple top and back, maple neck, 2 HB-1 humbucking Ric pups, and deep dark, yet still "Ric-ish" top end. I highly recomend anyone to seek one out and try it.

yea the discontinued 4001/3 S models had dots and no binding.

I might have to turn in my Ric-signation soon. Financial crises have driven me mad. I'm ready to sell my 4001! I'll still have my 360, but still... Nothing is more depressing than seeing the favorite one go.

Do I lose my spot if this dark day comes? (Even if I claim to be a Ric man forever?)

I have played two 2008 4004s. They sound SO good. I've thought about trading a 4003 for one. The neck profile is wide yet shallow, which for me translates into super comfy. They also sustain nicely in the best of the Ric tradition. The pickups are really wonderful, clear, articulate humbuckers that closely approximate Hi-Gain tone. I actually prefer the humbuckers, though, and am going to put them into one of my 4003s when I get the chance.

I hate to say it because I want to buy one before they are all sold from the last batch, but the 4004s are superb...

First off, they're dead silent, due to the humbucking pups. After that, compared to a 4003, they're much darker sounding. Think 4003 with BEEF. Also lighter in weight than a 4003. I've had 2 70's 4001's, and 3 4003's since I first started playing Rics. I've never really been without one, but since owning the 4004, I could see myself not using the 4003 much anymore. In fact, I just might sell my '06 4003.

Hmmmm, darker sunding with beef, sounds like a Thunderbird to me.

At any rate, you may want to hold off ditching that 4003. Many that do live to regret it.
