I own three--2007 4003, 2008 4003FL (favorite), and 2009 4003--and they're each just "above and beyond" sort of basses. I don't get frustrated with them like I have other basses, which have since been sold. Seems like they can do just about anything. Incredibly, I don't really GAS for stuff anymore--not like I used to.

Other than a 4004?

I know the feeling. I've got the 4003S/5 and although it's got its "issues" of tight spacing I can honestly say it's one that I will never get rid of and likely wouldn't sell it over a regular 4001/3.

I just need a fretless and another 4 stringer and I will be happy. My thoughts are a 4003FL and a 4004C (although I'm open to Cii or L).

I would acquire a 4004 but I don't feel the "urge" for it like I used to for lots of different basses--although I have played a 4004 and they are certainly nice. I can look at a 4004--or the occasional super-awesome P Bass or Stingray or Bongo--and go, "Yeah, I'd play that." But I don't have this irrepressible urge to put a charge on my credit card for anything, like I used to compulsively do before I amassed my current stable.

i've had a few over the years,and currently have 2. one is a '74 set neck 4000,white w/black trim,outfitted with the aluminum hipshot bridge,60's maxima flatwounds,and a deer antler nut. my other rick is a 2004 mapleglo 4004cii,which i'm thinking of restringing bead,as the low end on this thing KILLS......

That sucks to hear that. (job loss) You're not alone.
I lost my job last December 19th. It's almost a year now.
I can't part with any of my basses though.
The day I do that, a job will be offered.
Murphy's law finds me everytime!

If what you meant was that FG looks quite similar to the AFG, then I agree. A very sweet FG to be sure.

Binding looks too white to be amber, at least from the picture. Besides, it was a 2006 COTY limited edition.

The 4004Cii is an excellent candidate for BEAD tuning. I did it to mine a few weeks after I got it. Had to file the nut a wee bit, and settled on 65-85-105-125 gauge strings, (Fender, or Slinky's). Stunning low end, but still rings like a piano. Go for it.

Just joined and looking for clubs. I'm a 30 year Ric fan. My latest is this 2009 Midnight Blue 4003. Normal gigs I use this with a Hiwatt 200w Bass head into 8-10's and 2-15's. Plays like butter. My only complaint is that the neck hasn't dried totally and is still wandering. Had the same issue 30+years ago with my then new 4001 and two years in it finally calmed down.

You're not supposed to rest your arm on the side of any bass, binding or not. It leads to carpal tunnel.

No, not resting your arm, but if you play with a pick, the inside of your forearm rubs against that binding and makes it raw.
