I'll +1 the beef but not the darker bit. They have plenty of top end as far as bass guitar goes--they don't go up into the "Strat"-osphere but they really don't need to. Like I said above, I love 4004s, but I also just love those HB-1 pickups on their own. I've seen them installed in P Basses and they sounded fantastic there as well.

The 4000, 4001s, 4003s, 4003s5, 4003s8, 4001cs, 4001v63, 4001c64, blackstar, redneck, tuxeudo, and the shadow bass all had dotted necks without the triangle inlays.
Say RIC5, (and anyone else) what do you know about the 4003S/8 that was made from 1986-2003 (dates per Vintage Guitar Price Guide).
Pros/cons? Anything about its construnction, design flaws, limitations, good points, potential neck issues, whatever you know would be helpful.

I like the reverse headstock on the C series. I think it's unique and truly Rickenbacker, since the company put them out. I have it on my 4001C64 and 4001C64S, so I better like it!!
Ugh! I love being left handed so my wallet can avoid GAS pains, but this is too much!!
The only reason I would switch to right handed is so I could get a Ric...well that and I hate pencil smudges on my wrist when I write -- It is easier to get a date with a supermodel then to find a left handed Ric for sale.

To my understanding, the CNC machines are set up to rout the inlay cuts for righties, so instead of writing a separate program, testing and tweaking it to get it right, then alternating between the programs when lefty batches were run, they just stuck with the right handed inays.
The body and headstock wings are added to the neck, so they just need to be flipped to make a lefty.
It's to streamline production as much as possible, which is also why lefties have been temporarily discontinued: to reduce the massive backlog of orders.

Hey all, I figured this might be the place to go around here to ask this sort of question. Were there any Ricks made in 1979 that were factory mono only, and did not include Stereo? I've been offered a deal on a '79 Rick 4001, but the seller said it was a mono only when he got it, and had to send it to Rickenbacker to have the stereo installed. I know that in '79 most were made with stereo, so would this be a fake I'm getting?

That's strange, it definitely looks like it has triangle fret markings. I'm beginning to get skeptical. I'll ask for a serial and see what he gets back to me with.
And now that you know kcole4001's answer, you should be looking at binding and fret markers. Does the '79 have binding and sharkfin inlays? If no, then what he says is possibly true.
If yes, you have two options. 1) It's a fake of some sort (possible but slightly unlikely) and 2) It's never been sent back to the factory for this mod since it already came that way from the factory.
So, the answer lies in the inlays and the binding.
