Starscream, go to the RIC website, and use the serial # decoder. It will tell you the week it was finished, (if you want to know). I'm very happy for you, as you seem to be thrilled yourself. Enjoy it.
Oh this bass is all that. Several people here kept trying to get me to play one before I bought one because their binding and body shape seems to be either hit or miss with people and some Im sure thought I would be so disappointed in one. But as Ive said, I love the body on my lawsuit les paul and its just brutal on its binding and really pointy sharp edged. I mean Id get red grooves on my inner forearm when I played it, bent over with it in my lap once and gouged a rib with it. I seriously need to take pictures of its binding, just torture. But I was thinking, the Les actually doesnt bother me, nothing could be worse you know LOL I read all the pros and cons from people that loved them to people that hated them. I had Eaglemoon take some really detailed pics of her last Ric at specific angles so I could see what all the fuss was about (as well as try to figure out the complaint of no place to rest your thumb). And I saw nothing whatsoever that looked like it would be a problem for /me/. There was no way I could find one in the flesh before I bought one. And like I said, the seller knew the types of necks I liked and stuff and felt this one would be a good match for me. And boy was it ever. And even had it not been, Id have adapted myself to it (one thing I became of the opinion of as Im learning about Rickenbacker basses, you don't make them bow to you, you adapt to them or you move on). But the only thing Im trying to adapt to is not to have it in my hands ALL day long LOL I think I defied the odds getting the fit I got with this Ric.

It'll probably tell you what month and year it was made, only for the more recent years will it give the week and year.
Funny, the binding never bothered me, and my first good bass was my 4000 (no binding), but I play 'em fairly low, that's what I find comforble.
Thumb anchoring is something that varies with song and tempo for me, but the reble pup surround works pretty well (without the cover on), but sometimes I use the neck pup edge or the edge of the fingerboard, or even just the edge of the pickguard up by the neck pup.
There's actually a spot where the chrome is almost worn off the treble pup surround on my 4000 from keeping my thumb there over the years, and a spot where I've worn through the finish with my arm.
Honest wear from years of daily playing.

Oh yes all the places you mentioned is where I anchor too (and I dont always stay in the same spot either). There seems to be lots of places to anchor your thumb on a Ric IMO. I did put the cover back over my bridge pup though which is fine too for me and make a perfect hand rest when I play with a pick. 
I've lost count of how many times I've had that cover on and off, you can do it without taking off the strings, that's usually my method, but it's not much fun.

great looking ric. i noticed that the inlays go all the way to the binding like on the old ones (60's-early 70's). i've never seen that before.
seeing all these pictures is brutal on me. i've had the GAS from hell for a 4003 for 3 years now and each picture and story about how someone just got one makes it worse

I own three--2007 4003, 2008 4003FL (favorite), and 2009 4003--and they're each just "above and beyond" sort of basses. I don't get frustrated with them like I have other basses, which have since been sold. Seems like they can do just about anything. Incredibly, I don't really GAS for stuff anymore--not like I used to.
