I'm a relative noob on thickness of Ric necks. Also, there's a lot of mixups in this discussion between what I call neck thickness (from the top of the fretboard to the back of the neck) and width (from the top of the fretboard near the fat string across to the bottom of the fretboard near the skinny string). Terminology seems to be problematic in discussing this as some people use the term "width" interchangably.

All I have to go by is my 4003S/5 and what I sorta recall about my late 80s/early 90s 4003--which I never compared to another Ric before selling it.

I don't think the 'width' has ever changed. The width of the nut and neck have been the same for many years. I agree, some people confuse neck 'width' with neck 'thickness.' If Rick changed the 'width' they'd have to alter the nut and frets as well. I don't believe that's been the case in recent history (30 years or so).

The ''thickness' of the neck (from the top of the fingerboard to the back of the neck) seems to vary every so many years. And I believe it's deliberate and extends beyond the variance in the person that sands it down prior to finishing.

The necks on my C64 4001 (single piece construction) are much thinner than the one on my 1982 4003 (two piece - laminated), which is thinner than the neck on my Jan 2009 4003 (single piece construction), which is the meatest neck of any bass in my possession. And I love it! :hyper:

I am a big fan of Seymour Duncan pickups except I don't like their Ric replacement pickups. They sound bland. Like eating french fries that haven't been salted.

LET ME IN!!!!!
Just got this a week ago. Spent way to much money on it but I sold three fenders so I was flush with money. 2005 mapleglo. Just strung it up with some new roto's and it sounds killer! I have a little setup to do but I'm allready digging it. I used it last weekend at a gig with my svt/8x10 rig. I had just got it a couple of days earlier and hadn't had a chance to play it with the band yet but I thought I'd go for it anyway. We play this Trower song, too roling stoned and it has a pretty stand outish bass line. Anyway, the rick ROARED. Can't wait to experiment with it some more

yesterday being Christmas we dropped by on a little old lady we know...her dryer died.....we took her our old one (as we got a new one)....long story short she knows i play.....he son used to play this, but is no longer with us....

she thought it was from the 70's, but according to the serial # it was made in November of 1986....the original pups have been replaced the ones in it now have seymour duncan logo's on them

it is all black but has a broken (dash line) white binding...the fretboard has black dot inlays instead of the shark fin.....

I would think personal taste comes into it too. You gotta expect that one thing won't suit every player.

For example I love the Seymour Duncan Ric pickups, the brigde pickup just rips and snarls, in the bass I have it in, ne neck one is super creamy and smooth.

The one problem I found, was the bridge pickup is *much* hogher output than the neck one, I was thinking to replace the neck pickup with a toaster.

most likely headed for the bay or the classifieds here to fund a tube head and and or a couple new cabs or a vintage Koa B.C. Rich Mockinbird

even though i like these pups a lot better...i have come to the conclusion that ric's are just not for me

on a positive note however the original pups have been found....!

Do a search for 'Shadow' Ricks before selling.
They do command a premium over and above the usual 4003 prices from the same condition/vintage if it's all original.
It's usually all about the condition and originality to Rick afficianados and collectors.

Well, thats being treated good, I suppose, if it'll get you what you really want, it sucks when there's an instrument you really like, but it dosen't suit you. :hmm:

I suppose a future option, would be to get a bass built up to look like a Ric, but to feel, and sound like one of your Trabens, espcially as I hear Rockfield will soon be selling their bass pickups as aftermarket.

Never really had two setups with which to use my Rick-O-Sound so its been sitting idle
now for about 20+ years. Ouch! That's a cryin' shame, huh? Really wished that I'd had the
discretionary income as a kid growing up back in the '80s here in ND but it never came to
fruition. Still have my old Yamaha 115 thirty watt combo from about 1980 and my
current Ampeg setup. I keep the Yamaha for sentimental reasons only. I tried
the Ampeg/Yamaha combo just for fun but it was more of a David and Goliath matchup.
I knew that going in but it was worth a try anyway.

So there ya have it, close but no cigar! Like missing out on prom back in '85.
Oh well, with the Rick-O-Sound I still have a second chance at redemption!
So I'd to know about everyone's thoughts, opinions and experiences with a Rick-O-Sound.
As everyone knows, there's a myriad of amp head/cabinet combinations and with a
Rick-O-Sound thrown into the mix the combinations are literally endless!
Love to hear some feedback! Amps, cabinets, combos, placement, etc.
No two will surely be alike. Thanks! Now let's ride!!!

One other thing. I may resurrect this thread sometime in the future.
Maybe days, weeks or even months from now just to give those folks
who didn't see it the first time a chance to chime in. So don't get
too upset if there's some "deja vu all over again".

Heck, I didn't even know that RIC discontinued manufacturing the Rick-O-Sound! That IS something not to like and it's an issue easy enough for even the average layperson to wrap their head around! As opposed to the "I hate 'em cuz they're ugly" threads which keep rearing "their ugly heads" (no pun intended--seriously) from time to time around TB. I'm really gettin sick and tired of all the "ugly" comments made by a very small minority of TBers. They really ought to read the rules first. Ugly is word that is strictly verboten in my book and should be in everyone else's as well. Oops! Gettin' off topic!! Thanks for chimin' in Gibenbackerbass! Always look forward to hearin from ya! Yeah its a sweet bass. It's also the one that I've had the longest by far. Basically it was my first nice bass. Picked it up when it was "almost new" in 1982. I was just a kid so I basically worked in a retail store all summer at essentially minimum wage to buy it. Other basses have come and gone, but I'll never get rid of my 4001.
