Here's my new No.1, made in week 03 of 2010:

edit:HOLY CARP!!!
I just plugged her into my PC and ran through Freewill. She's HOT HOT HOT!
I had to adjust the levels BIG TIME, pull the vintage tone selector out, and I should drop the bridge pup.
No weak E string here!
Sounds fantastic, and that piano tone when played softly, WOW!

Yep it is BG....my favorite Ric color...Still waiting for it to get here but I think it is a regular p/u in the bridge area...SD in the neck...that will have to change...BA II I think...I have bridges sitting around also....

Well, she needs a fret job, and while Bruce (the best local guy) assures me there is still enough there for a proper job, it's getting dangerously close to needing a refret after years of (other people's) abuse and neglect.

I've ressurrected her as far as I can, and she certainly sounds great. Every time we get that stage volume going, it's love all over again, but that new 4003 is really going to be 'my' bass from the very start.
No issues or compromises at all.

I came to the realization last night that I believe RIC is using the same CNC body cuts for the 4003 and 4004 now.
I could be wrong, but the similarity is remarkable.

The slimmer body, position of the neck/body joint, and there's more of a wave crest on the body bout than a 4001/4000/4080/early 4003 (which is all I have to compare to).

The body horns are certainly a lot slimmer than all of my basses.

Yep, the body was slimmed down in 1997. That is the last time I bought a newer one...I can't get around that....it is more like they were trying to recreate the body of the early ones but for me it just doesn't look right...

I prefer the slim vintage look, but enjoy the modern features.
I checked out your myspace and I love your tone, BTW.

Here are some measurements:

2010 4003:
nut: 43.23 mm
neck at body: 59.01 mm
string spacing: 15.3mm (average)

1977 4001:
nut: 42.54
neck at body: 58.08 mm
string spacing: 15.4 (Hipshot bridge optimized for pickup pole coverage)

Thanks for your encouragement!! :D

I use a variety of different Rics to make tone but there are a couple that really sing compared to some others....I have been able to dig into certain years because of what I get out of them and then there are other years that I will not touch because of how many of that year that I have had. I have a few favorite years...those are the ones I try to hold on to...
