The Rickenbacker Club Part Twelve

I'd restore it. You know, every time I see one of those old beat up Precisions that everyone fawns over and says is filled with "mojo", I think to myself "yeah, I'd refinish that". To me, "mojo" is a plot device from an Austin Powers movie, not a finish for a beloved musical instrument. Probably not a safe view point here on TalkBass...

Right there with you on that.

It's not that beat up is worth more than beautifully finished, it's that original is worth more than refinished, at least for certain antique/vintage items like instruments and furniture. A *really* exceptional refinishing job might not detract much, but an average one does irreparable damage.

Yeah, I get it. It's just that if I were looking for an older instrument, and there were 2 identical ones - one with the original finish but beat up, and one with a nice refinish, I'd pay more for the refinished one. I guess I just like shiny things.
People pay extra for new "relic" -finished basses. I don't get that, personally, especially when they look so obviously faked. I agree though that anytime i'm buying something,i generally prefer that it be in nice condition.

I'm looking for opinions on whether to restore my Chris Squire signature bass. Any opinions/suggestions are appreciated.

Here's the thread:
Chris Squire signature Rickenbacker. To restore, or not to restore?

The orange is actually kinda cool.

The bass is like 20 plus years old,and the coloration came from being in a smoking environment....
Oh. Well, that's kinda what happens to white finishes around smoke.

I always wondered about Rick James. He must have been quite the prude, if "incense, wine and candles" are enough to make you a Super-Freak. He never met some of my friends...Lol. He should have seen the weird bass thread! ;) Cool song though. Thanks.

But he does say 'she' is kinky… (and white Ric's are sexy…)
