the right tone for your band?

At the moment i play a Ibanez heavily modified at home with EMG's and stuff.

The other day my guitarist was trying out a new amp in the shop an i desided to play bass along side and picked up a Squire Jazz, I have always hated these basses when I have used them on my own but im going back to the store to buy this bass next week because of how it sound with my guitarist. :bassist:

Not bought, but modified. Defretted a Squier VM Precision.

But I mainly play my fretted P, after all... just fits right in.

Though I sometimes wish I had a fretless 5er Jazz for the versatility, I could need the low B for some songs and fretless is always a plus in my book.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I was the only possible one. I like Warwick's tones, but I'm playing a Fender MIJ '51P RI with a group. And I gotta say, I'm pretty pleased with how it sits in the mix, but would like to "tweak" it in a few areas. I don't know if a different sounding bass would do that for me. I would prefer alittle more growl.

Haha, I was just thinking about this in my last rehearsal. I currently having been using my StingRay but have found the tone a little too crisp and biting. I currently want to get a P for a fuller, grunty tone.

It's funny... it's not like I plan it, it just works out that way. Our first guitarist used a MiM Telecaster, and my MIM P went really well with it. Our second guitarist had one of those cheap dual humbucker Ibanez jobs, and I got my MIM Jazz around the time he joined up, and they sounded good together. The guy before our current guitarist was really Hendrix-ey and played a Warmoth Strat which my Dirnt matched with. The guy we play with now uses a Parker, which seems to be working really well with my Jag.

Um, can we modify this a bit and ask

Ever sold a bass based on it's tone not fitting your current project/band?

If so, yes...about 6~8 basses eBayed. The ones that fit are accidental(wasn't counting on them to work but they did).
The "fit" was verified by both my ears and recording every gig with a Zoom H4 just to be sure my perception of "how it sounded" was reality.

IMHO and IME, the tone of the band (at least in the bands I've so far played with, either as the leader, as a band member or a sub), starts from the tone of the drums, from the style of music that your musical performance fits in and the tones you want to emulate.

Try to record as much as you can from your rehearsals (with the WHOLE of the band), with different basses and settings, then get back to the recordings and be as critical as you can be as to which of the tones fit best in the performance.

Yeah, how everya wanna ask it. Here are some tracks that the singer has previously recorded. We are redoing the song called Still Counting, and Stand By. All I can hear is a background P-bass, but maybe I could put something different in there. I could ask'em what the previous bassist used, but he doesn't seem like he would be able to recall that kind of info, nor would care. I am in the market for a new bass, but am afraid that what I like to hear in the bass may not sound good in the band mix. Plus, I'm a "big" dude:eek:, and need a "big" bass. I don't like looking like I play a toothpick. Plus, I feel the size of the bass adds to the "booty" of the tone.:bassist:

yup
usually i use something different in every band
for example im in 3 bands atm

band 1: thunderbird (altho a eb-3 might work better) > big muff > chorus > normal bassman channel

band 2: p-bass >whammy >synth > fuzz >line 6 looper > epiphone valve jr. >2x8 p.a cab

band 3: i play guitar

but for every band ive been in i aquired a new peace of gear

but most stuff the jazz or p will do

I've never bought a bass because of a band, but I own about 15 basses (a lot of different P and J's, a G&L L-2000, a Warmoth MM type bass and a Spector Euro 5lx), and I use whatever bass fits the band best. So even though I'm in love with the Spector and want to use it for everything, there are times where my trusty Fender P just sounds best.
